are you just putting plain/solid fabric together in a square and plan to hand quilt each (small) square then turn them into a quilt?
if the fabric is solid/plain you could draw with pencil or chalk a design to quilt. or if it is a print you could follow the print detail for your quilting.
if you type quilting designs in to your search engine you will find thousands of links. also here on the board type hand quilting into the search and there are a few tutorials for technique help. Nancy Zeiman has a book out called 5-10-15 minutes to quilt...that book has alot of good information in it. good luck!

If you're just stumped on what design to use for the quilt, you could always post a picture of it and ask for ideas around here. But it's hard to say anything without actually seeing the quilt.
