Hand quilting
 

I have been hand quilting my quilts and really need to know if single thread or a double thread is used. I have done the double thread but I think it is too thick. Can someone tell me what is usually used.

I use one thread and run it through bees wax or other thread conditioner. It makes it easier to pull through multiple layers. Don't forget to keep moving your needle up the thread as you quilt to prevent having your thread fray.

I don't know of a rule when hand quilting regarding thread. I do use single thread and like a hand quilting thread. The one I am using currently is by Gutterman. However if you like or need to use two strands , by all means do so.

Single thread is traditional and is what I do. The reasoning behind not doing double threads is that then the threads rub against each other and cause wear.

I think if you were to check library books on hand quilting, all of them would recommend single thread.

I use a single thread and sometimes use the conditioner. I also tie a small knot and 'pop" it through the fabric. I make my thread about one arms length from shoulder to wrist.

I use a single strand also. I have used beeswax, but lately prefer thread magic conditioner. I try not to cut more than a yard of thread at a time, to prevent wear...I always end up back to using the Americana thread I get in Joannes for 99 cents! I actually threw out a few spools of the more expensive threads, that seemed to wear and knot up so easily in comparison

I've never heard of anyone using a double thread for the quilting. I only use double thread for putting the binding on the back and that gives me enough tangles.

I have seen antique quilts with double thread but I don't think they looked that good. I have been using single thread for the last 30 years.
