Saw a tutorial video on tube quilting. Has anyone done this?

burnsk 11-05-2009 10:08 PM

Here's the URL for the video:

Mamagus 11-06-2009 04:11 AM

I am making some Christmas runners with a friend before Christmas. She isn't very experienced... I think we just found our project! Thanks for posting!

reneebobby 11-06-2009 04:40 AM

Very interesting looks super simple.

Stitchnripper 11-06-2009 05:29 AM

Thanks for sharing. I'm definitely going to try it.

Cool now I know what I'm gonna do today ;) ;)

minstrel 11-06-2009 05:49 AM

Thanks for posting! I GOTTA try it. Think I'll make some table runners like she suggested. Can't wait to start.

sandpat 11-06-2009 05:50 AM

Wow..that looks so easy, fun and quick! Thanks for sharing!

pocoellie 11-06-2009 05:58 AM

Thanks so much for that site. I had never heard of tube quilting, but it sure looks easy. I'm going to have to try that.

renee765 11-06-2009 06:18 AM

Who thinks up these neat and easy techniques? I can barely follow a printed pattern, let alone develop a new technique!

Renee

Rose Marie 11-06-2009 07:29 AM

I love it. Thank you. Have to do that one for Christmas.
I have done tube quilts with El Burns but a very different pattern using many strips.

omak 11-06-2009 07:31 AM

Actually, the technique is very old, referenced as "bishop's scarf" ... I learned about it on Sew Perfect a bunch of years ago ... guest was:
Linda Maghee ... I used the technique to use in foundation pieced vest ...
however, the newest book I have found is called Tube Piecing (?) been awhile since I have seen my copy <g> ...
and, the author has done some amazing things with the technique.
God bless those souls who must look to the skies, when the rest of us are willing to settle on the view at our feet! LOL ...
now, to go find the book! <wave>

Sugarpumpkin 11-06-2009 09:27 AM

This looks great.
Thanks so much! I can't wait to give this a try on my next quilt! (should be quick too since I need to get it and another quilt done for Christmas!)

knanna 11-06-2009 09:33 AM

I made a Bargello quilt by tube quilting. I made it from jelly rolls and there were much more strips sewn together to form the tube than what was shown in the video you posted. It was definitely something different to try than the usual strip quilting I'm used to doing.

Luv2Kreate 11-06-2009 09:48 AM

That was a great tutorial...going to have to try this.

amma 11-06-2009 11:36 AM

I have not seen or done this before, but I sure will be giving it a go in the future!!! Thank you so much for posting this link!!!

Rose Marie 11-06-2009 11:49 AM

I couldnt wait to try it.
My two strips came out at 4 1/2 so cut my third strip that size, it works just fine.
Love that block, so easy.

omak 11-06-2009 12:42 PM

 I didn't check to see what you were discussing, and now I surmise that you aren't talking about the same things I was! deepest apologies!
When I get back to it, I will find the site/book/whatever that will show you what I thought was being talked about.

omak 11-06-2009 01:45 PM

Okey, dokey!
SO I got a chance to watch the video and agree, that is a fun way to make that block! I have practiced doing this before, but I couldn't figure out why I always had to "unsew" a few stitches (which they told me I would have to do, but still! <g>) anyway, the tip I picked up was: Put the 45 degree line on the sewn line ... almost makes for a dog-ear free block! Cool!

littlehud 11-06-2009 05:25 PM

Interesting. I can't wait to try it.

dvseals 11-06-2009 07:01 PM

Tried this today got myself 12 nice blocks and it was just as easy as it looked in the video.
(mine came out to 4 3/8 in wide but did like Rose Marie and just cut large strip same size)
daughter helped lay them out we've got 12 different layouts..
some do look alike but there are differences because she used the 2 diff squares in different ways.
Will post a pic soon as I get them sewn together part way cause if I move them now I'll not know how they go together again LOL

dvseals 11-06-2009 07:54 PM

k here's some pics daughter thought all 1 layout was too boring
so insisted on using all 12 diff ones in quilt...
couple of them ya can't see the entire block sorry bout that.

burnsk 11-06-2009 08:14 PM

What fun. Thanks for the pics. Those are way too cool.

You inspired me and I tried it tonight and found I could get 10 cuts out of 2 fabrics from a jelly roll (2.5 cut strips) matched up with a contrasting fabric. It was fun to try all the different layouts. Thank you for taking pictures and posting. Now I have to figure out what to do with the 2 left over squares. Probably use for another project.

I'll take pictures tomorrow and try to get them online.

I laid the 45 degree line of my ruler on the edge of the fabric and the tip was on the sewn line at the top. Didn't have to undo any sewing lines. Did you do it that way too?

dvseals 11-06-2009 08:31 PM

my 45 line was on the seam didn't have to undo any stitches either and half the "dogears" were cut off in the process which was nice

left overs? hehe
just do another the way you did your first and you'll have an even # of squares ;)

I did 5 tubes to get my 12 blocks

and you're welcome for the pics
I'm going to have to do this again when daughter isn't around and just make 1 layout.. once I figure out which of these I like the best hehehe

omak 11-06-2009 08:45 PM

Good going! You are having waaayyy too much fun, and so quickly! That is so fine!
Thank you and daughter for sharing!
<wave>

burnsk 11-06-2009 08:45 PM

I like your #1, #6, #8, #12. Each one of my tubes are from different fabrics. That's why I had 2 squares left from each one. Figure I could use them for borders, each facing the same way using the contrasting fabric for the base. I'm using a jelly roll I bought from Connecting threads because I like the colors but didn't have anything in mind when i bought them. Just wanted to add them to my stash. Like I needed more stash. Will try to post some picture tomorrow or Monday. Will look forward to your input when I get them posted.

omak 11-06-2009 08:56 PM

oh, goody! I get to anticipate all weekend long ... I am just loving your pictures!

wvdek 11-06-2009 09:07 PM

This is so cool. I think even I can do this without messing it up.
How much fabric did it take for 5 tubes/12 blocks?
What was the finished size of the blocks-12"?

dvseals 11-06-2009 09:16 PM

how much fabric? ummm I really didn't keep track but lets see...
5 tubes probly close to bout 15'' per 2.5'' strip and bout 25'' for the contrast

not got all blocks sewn together completely but I guestimate 10'' unfinished or close to that.

cool burnsk can't wait to see them :)

tlrnhi 11-06-2009 09:41 PM

I did a table runner last night with it. Then the leftovers, I made a hot pad. I'll post pictures of it later.
I just had a problem that seams didn't want to match up, but I think it was me and was trying to rush thru, not watching what I was doing. It's still pretty and hubby says I need to sell it because he thinks it'll make money in the craft fair even with the little "off" spots.

burnsk 11-06-2009 09:56 PM

If you use 2 - 2.5 inch strips to make your tube, when you sew 4 squares together they come out at 10.5" unfinished. I'm going to experiment with sewing 3 - 1.5 in. strips together and see what they come out to. Geesh how I get side-tracked when I have other things I need to do. But I love to do new things. I guess I'm scatter brained. Does anyone else feel like this? Is this why I have so many UFO's? I have so many blocks that have never made it to completed quilts because I get side tracked. HELP HELP HELP

sandpat 11-07-2009 05:17 AM

Love what you did with the blocks! That looks like way too much fun so quickly!

sewjoyce 11-07-2009 06:36 AM

Wow -- that looks so easy!!! OK, you math pros out there -- what size do I need to cut the strips to up with a 12 1/2" block????

Rose Marie 11-07-2009 07:24 AM

Just made 8 blocks.
They are on the bias so be careful ironing and joining. Also when you iron the backgrd seams do one color toward the backgrd or you wont get opposite seams.
They went togather well but the measurement on the video is wrong, you get 4 1/2 inch with two strips joined. Do the math.
My blocks came out just shy of 11 inchs.

Thank you so much for the link!
My Mom has been brainstorming ways for her church group to jazz up their charity quilts. It seems they were stuck in a 4-patch or 9-patch rut. This should really open doors for them!

dmackey 11-07-2009 10:17 AM

Here is a link to the book "Tubular Quilting"
http://www.amazon.com/Totally-Tubula...7616463&sr=1-2

and if you can find it, the show that Alex Anderson used to host, "Simply Quilts" had a show with the author of the book, and I think the show was called "Psychedelic Tubes" I just have a hard time finding stuff on the HGTV web site, and getting a link for it. Hopefully, this one will work:
http://www.hgtv.com/search/results.d...hType=HGTV.com

It appears to show only two of the four segments for the whole show.
