I have a whole bunch of nine patch blocks from a swap on another web site. I was thinking about making some of them into stuffed animals. I have heard of recycling old quilts into animals but was thinking that the batting would be too bulky when turning the arms and legs. I was wondering if I put a muslin backing on the blocks for stability since there are so many seams that may came apart in the blocks. What do you guys think?

I haven't made any, but I think using the muslin like you are saying would work.
I'm anxious to see your little creations!

I gave one of my very first quilts to my younger sister. It was a tied scrap quilt. I think the pattern was a pinwheel variation. Anyway, my sister used it for a long time, until it wore out. I then use it for some stuffed animals - cats and bears. I didn't find the batting too bulky, but it was pretty thin.

I think it is a good idea to make fabric from the pine patch blocks. Using a muslim backing on the blocks and may be machine quilting them in the ditch would make a sturdy fabric.

I used to make cutter quilt animals, mainly bears and floppy-eared bunnies, but never had any problems. Maybe the patters I used didn't have the same level of detail as yours.
