Have anyone tried to quilt a crewel work bedspread??

So I bought a lovely bedspread at a tag sale with beautiful crewel work that was done by an 80 year old lady. It was $20 and I just could not let it go unappreciated.

However it was made for a full size bed and I have a queen. So I thought that I would add borders, sandwich it, and do FMQ on the top in the white spaces. I have always wanted to do a whole cloth quilt and this will be close but will also mix nicely with the crewel work.

However, since it is (I think) linen, it is HEAVY and slippery!! I am hoping that once it is sandwiched and I get it onto the machine it will go ok, but I will take any advice i can get for working with material of this type. I am using my mid arm and i have my drop leaf extended to support the weight.

Any advice?????

I think I would use it as a bed topper - finish the edges and just use it for 'decoration' like a table cloth.

I'd love to see a picture of it.

I will definitely post a picture of it after I get it 'birthed' while it is on my machine. I would love to have used it as is but it was really too small, especially as a summer quilt - my husband is a bit large and also steals the covers!

You don't mention how the bedspread is finished.

Is it possible to make and quilt JUST the borders using the fabric of your choice, and then add them to the bedspread via QAYG?

You could use a batting that would best match the weight of the linen center.

That way you wouldn't be making it any heavier than it already is, and not have to deal with quilting a monster-sized quilt..
