Have a question about String Quilts.
 

I get the newsletter from Quilter's World magazine, and today they had an article about making string quilts. You can read it here:

After reading it, I'm totally confused. Basically it says that you stack your backing, batting, and then put the string quilted piece on top... okay, I get that. But then how would you finish the quilt? If the backing is already attached also, you'd have to put sashing in between all the pieces because of the raw edges, right?

Perhaps it's because today is my birthday and I'm a year older (ahem), but I am just not getting a visual of this in my head!

I've been saving all of my little scraps to make one of these scrappy string quilts, so I want to make sure I understand the how-tos. I'm sure there are lots of string quilters around these parts who can come to my aid!

Wow. There is a serious lack of information in that article. I think they assume that anyone working on that project already knows how to finish a "quilt-as-you-go" project. I'm wondering if maybe it's part of a larger article that was published in the magazine, and the magazine gives you ALL the instructions - but it sure would be nice if they could state that somewhere.

If you want to make this, I would recommend googling "quilt as you go" or "cotton theory quilting" and you will find lots of information about this. A woman with the last name of Cotton (sorry, can't remember her first name) has written books about this subject, you may be able to find it at your library.

Or, you could make a string top and use traditional methods to quilt it. There is a good paper-piecing tutorial that uses the sew-n-flip method here: http://www.filminthefridge.com/2009/...pieced-method/

Peckish is right.. that article is giving instructions for a Quilt As You Go block not quilt...

just follow the same string directions just OMIT the batting and backing.... Make the block and then finish off the quilt like any other..


I usually sew strips on to a piece of paper from my telephone book.. Lots of pages in there.. make my stitches smaller so the paper tears off easily. cut the size block i want, in the direction of the strings i want and its done..

Both give good advice. Paper piecing the blocks are the easiest! Heck even I can do it!! Larger needle small stiches, paper stays on long enough to get the pieces done. I reccommend using phonebook pages.

If you want to do it with the batting and backing, Ditter has a tutorial here or Google 'Fun and Done'. Two different methods, but similar in concept.

Happy Birthday! No help with the string quilt though!!!

This tut is in Spanish (I watched it with the mute on) but in the last few min. she uses bias tape to join her pieces together. I also liked her idea for a Drunkerds Path.
