No, they won't let me on the boat.....the captain said it would tip over.

craftybear 05-30-2010 04:23 PM

marsye, that captain is funny looking, thanks for a big laugh

I have been on cruises in the last 20 years but not for quilting. The cost is high even though I know it would be great fun. So I calculate how much fabric I can buy for the cost of the cruise and go to a retreat instead. LOL. One day I would like to take one just so I can say I did. Hope we all get to go on one.

One of my quilting friends and I are thinking about the quilting cruise to Bermuda, but haven't decided for sure yet.

I have 3 friends that went on a quilting cruise in April and they all said they would never do it again. First of all they said they were dead tired - had to be at the class at 8:00 AM on the days they were at sea and spent the best part of the day in class - missing all the activities that they paid high price for. They worked on 3 projects and none were ones they they would have choosen (no choice) to work on - more like craft projects and of course they had to pay for all the materials. This cruise was sponsered by Baby Lock and it went out of FL - pretty sure it was Ft Lauderdale. A sewing show that sells Baby Lock took them by bus from The Villages at Lady Lake to the ship. Baby Lock did provide the sewing machines.

I have been dreaming of a quilt cruise. Not really thinking it will happen for a few years, since I have small kids. But I would love, love, love to go. If I could find one that sounded interesting. I did look at some that didn't sound like the things you would be working on were something that interested me. But I would like to try a cruise, and my husband has no interest in them, so might as well combine one with my hobby, right?

dkabasketlady 05-30-2010 08:15 PM

Not a quilting cruise, but I have gone on 3 other cruises!! I can't justify spending an extra $1000 for the quilting part and working on projects that I don't want to do!! Too many seminars and not being able to relax on the ship. You're so busy when you're in ports that I want to relax while at sea and do my own thing on my OWN time not 8am.
Fons & Porter has a quilt cruise that they're advertising right now!

I look at the offerings for quilting cruises in the various quilting magazines and then I read the reviews and look at the pictures. Honestly I am torn about the idea. One part of me wants to go and take classes from fabulous quilting teachers and the other part of me wants to sit in a lounge chair on the upper deck with a vampire story book and an umbrella drink.

Be sure and read all of the Terms. Some have the right to change the instructors. It is in the very small print and you have to look hard for the link. It was an expensive lesson.

Not yet, but my sister is paying for the 2 of us to go on a Sisterhood of Quilters cruise in 8/11 to Alaska. Will be gone 7 days and will be taking a class on board ship to make a wall hanging. She and I both hand quilt but Bernina will be furnishing machines for those who machine quilt. We will be in 3 separate ports and go to quilt shops. We're both trying to save money to buy fabric in at least ONE of the shops.

LindaR 05-31-2010 05:26 AM

I've checked in to a few but you must fly to either FL or CA and that really ups the price for me being so far away from either....I would love to go on one tho someday

teddysmom 05-31-2010 05:37 AM

We're flying from Detroit to Seattle.

I did something similar two times. A friend of mine who owns a little quilt shop organized a handquilting workshop on the ferry from Kiel in Germany to Oslo in Norway and I had the honor being the teacher! Oslo is such a wonderful city and I love Norway a lot. The trips were absolutely great!

mtnmama 05-31-2010 08:36 AM

I haven't taken any cruise before but have seen the advertisements in quilting magazines. Somehow it doesn't make sense to me. Why would you want to be sitting at a sewing machine indoors missing the outdoor activity. Even if the outdoor activity is sitting in a lounge chair on deck with a good drink in my hand. I have a hard time deciding when I am at home whether to go upstairs to my sewing room or stay outside planting flowers or pulling weeds. HMMM, all the flowers are planted, so it is down to weeds or quilting. Up stairs I go.
