I reluctantly agreed to make a memory quilt for a relative from her deceased husband's shirts. I really dislike sewing on this quilt. The shirts are ugly, all drab colors, flimsy fabric and almost worn out. It's sitting right over there making me feel guilty for not getting it sewn. I know I need to get started and not stop until it's done. I'm doing the quilt as you go method to be done when I'm done. Anyone ever have this problem with a quilt you did not want to make but was obligated because you said okay. ? :?

yeah, doing it right now. :lol: it's a quilt for my hubby. It's just a utility quilt. I think my problem is the free motioning i'm doing on it, trying to shove a large lap quilt into a small space. It's preventing me from starting other projects I'm dying to do. (like Christmas quilt for my sister)
I did work on it last night and hopefully I will tackle some more of it today.
Good luck and just keep on pushing thru and it will be done before you know it! At least that is what I keep telling myself! :lol:

Here's the rub: You agreed to do it - so get on the stick, lady! (OK that was my tough love message - lol) No, seriously, I think you knew that it would not be a fun project before you started. There is nothing you can change about the choice of colors, but you can change your attitude. Think of the love your friend will feel when she gets to hug her husband through your gift. THAT should be enough incentive to keep you going.

Can you make it a little smaller than you first wanted? Just pick out the nicest patterns instead of using every shirt.

I finished mine and felt sooooooo relieved (and good) when it was FINALLY done. YOU CAN TOO!

Really positive vibes, Martina - good advice, though I do sympathsize with the enormity of the initial problem. I have been known to open my big mouth and wish I hadn't, not so much with quilts, but when I used to make some of my own clothes, and then ended up trying to make some for REALLY fussy and awkward people I was trying to help out at the time. I have since learned to say that I only make for myself. I just don't need any more hassle.

Yes, I have two in my WIP box that I can't muster interest to get back to. They are not promised to anybody, so the only guilt is my own for wasting good fabric and many hours if I never get back to them. I'm sure your project will mean so much to the friend you are making it for. If I start a project I'm not crazy about, I make it smaller--a wall hanging, a throw, a table runner. At least when that's finished, I can move on. Good luck!

Thanks for the motivation. I know the relative will cherish the quilt so I'm going to focus on her instead of the quilt. It will mean so much to her and I keep forgetting that. I promise myself to have it finished this week. I'll post pictures. It's not pretty but it will be done.

You will feel so much lighter when you finish this. Just buckle down and DO IT! Reward youself with a project you REALLY want to do next.! :lol:

Start one for my niece. Absolutely hated it! It's now hiding in the attic. When I find it again -- trash!!!

My ex used to volunteer for projects. It took me a while to learn that some people just don't care whether their quilts are handcrafted or come from Chinese sweatshops. If I have to do one I don't particularly feel good about now, I choose a quick pattern so it finishes fast.

Get some really special chocolate and reward yourself for working on it.

Yes and still working on it, but it was for me so no biggie. But since its for a friend and its a memory quilt just I think the best thing is to just buckle down and get it done. You will feel so much better when it done, and she will be so thankful

Been there with my mother's big brown ugly quilt! She wanted it all in little strips so I did a string quilt. OMG! I thought I would never finish that! Not one speck of blue or green or purple! But I knew it was important to her so I kept going. I just kept telling myself that I would do something really pretty on my next project. Still haven't gotten to my 'really pretty' but it's coming! Can you add some burgandy and navy to break it up a bit? Hang in there!

Yes, I am working on one right now, I didn't like the design pattern she choose, didn't like trying to figure it out, and I should enjoy it, but it has been 7 months in the making and I am not done. Every time I tried working on it, I hated it, so I couldn't make myself do it. I am still trying.

Oh yes. I think everyone on the site has probably had this happen at least once. Post some pictures and get some positive feedback. There are a lot of people looking to encourage others here and sometimes that's all we need to get going.

Yes, there is one quilt that I do not like the colors, and it is hard to get it back out and get it finished...it makes me depressed almost to work on it LOL...Maybe I should get it out on a bright and sunny day and it will cheer that ol' thing up, too :lol: :lol: :lol:

Yes!!!!!. My daughters memory quilt. I used all of her sorority T shirts. ( I didn't want her to join this sorority). It was big and heavy and hard to work with. I was so glad when it was done. By the way, she loves it.

David came in the day before yesterday and says he needs a new truck curtian....so I know there is a shop that sells quilt tops so I run over grab a "BOY" looking one cuz he already said he doesnt want a frily one ...NOPE he hates the blue top...BUT he really like the top I have sitting on the ironing board...asks will that one work?
So I have to sew 3 more rows together and sew them on.....grumbling the whole time since he is leaving the next morning I have to have it done!

Long story short I finished it and tokk the pic and well hail its full of mistakes but I like it .....and David loves it.

Been there done that have the T shirt. That is why I don't participate in block of the month etc. Also why I rarely take any kind of class. I learned a long time ago to just do it. THat is the way I approach household chores that are far from being my favorite like washing dishes, toliets etc. As a quilter for hire I have had to work on some doozies.

yes. i hated the quilt that i made for my sister's wall. twin size for above a king-size bed. not my colors, not my pattern, took months because i couldn't stand it. and after asking for it it's lying on the floor in her bedroom

Yes, my sons skeleton quilt. I fought with the back for days. I bought the wrong fleece and this one was way to stretchy.

Been there, done that, too. Got one right now that was supposed to be for a very dear friend's birthday next week. Decided it'll be for Christmas instead because I have a hard time working on it. I'm more earthy-lodgy, muted colors and she's more modern-Asian, bright colors. Hate working on it. Not my style, not my colors...you know the drill. I just made up my mind that I'll give myself a break (and more time), knowing that she'll love it when I DO get it done.

That's sad. Did you find out what she doesn't like about it? She's your sister - I'd like to think the two of you could be honest with each other. Or did you get all the chutzpah in your family? :twisted:
