I try not to buy the border fabric until the top is almost put together. Another problem that I have is that sometimes the lap quilt "grows" into a full size or queen size quilt, and my original border is no longer carried in the lqs.

So glad to hear it wasn't me...it was the fabric. LOL

I am always changing the boarder fabric on quilts. that I why I am not too upset when I change my mind about how the boarder fabric will look. I just try not to do it on fabrics that I am not too fond of. This is how i have also gotten a bit of a stash.

Yes! I'll see a fabric and like it and say to myself, "I can work that into some quilt some day." Not knowing what that quilt will look like or if I have anything already to go with it or hope I'll run into something later...
And now I look at my fabric and say, "What was I going to do with THAT?"
That's why I'm forgoing (stab to my heart) all the sales going on now. I'm going to work with what I have now and worry about new fabrics later when I get there.

that's why i shop for colors for my palette, not specific prints/fabrics for specific quilts... if one pink looks good in this space...then 3 will look better and 5 will look great...a multi-group of fabrics makes your eye move and makes the quilt neverending... you see something new in it all the time... i don't use just anything, but i use all yellows in the same area, and all reds are equal, you get it...check it out...there are at least a half dozen yellows in this quilt... but from 10 feet away, they read the same...the overall design takes over...

It happens to me too. I have found that when I am auditioning things and trying to visualize what it will look like, I don't always get it totally right. I then need to make a quick adjustment, just like what you described. I like it. That is when the quilting process gets interesting to me, when quilts don't want to use the fabrics you have selected for them and they move to you find another...

I agree with Deemail above. She is absolutely right about her fabrics. Deemail the overall design is lovely!

thank you ... the good part about this style is that you never run out of fabric, you just go get another red and keep on quiltin'...
