I have made one for a friend's first grandchild. Using paper piecing makes it very simple. I actually combined the paper piecing method with the traditional method and the outcome was very nice. the strips are paper pieced and the centers are cut and sewn in the old fashioned way. EQ has many variations of double wedding ring and you can cut out templates or paper piece.

This was one of the very first quilts that I made and I left it "poofy" with not much quilting for the baby. She lives in a colder climate and her grandmother wanted it thicker. I would probably quilt it differently today.

I'm "starting" my golden years, and my aunt has quilted all of her life. She said that the Double Wedding Ring was the hardest that she had ever done. This has been SEVERAL years ago. Maybe by now there is an easier way?

i think the newer methods described in this thread are much easier...the templates, pre-cut with accu-cut and also the quiltsmart as well as variations which are paper pieced...alll wonderful. I do think an accurate seam allowance is the key. it's a good idea to make up a "block" and stitch to see if your "rings" or arcs are fitting the "football/melon" shapes. if so then keep going. I think it is more time consuming than sewing blocks of squares and triangles for sure, but it is also very rewarding when it comes out well. there are many beautiful pics on this topic!! you go girls!

Ditto. The biggest errors I made on my son's wedding quilt were not being accurate with my seams. I wish I'd had this thread before starting mine. Now I may be more inclined to make another, (my daughter says she wants one!) so I'll be experimenting alot before beginning hers! All of the ones pictured on this thread are lovely. :thumbup:

I have one as a WIP. Being new I am using the Quiltsmart arcs and tools. Then the wedding was called off and the quilt became a WIP.

The DWR is one of my favorite patterns. I have made 5 king/queen size quilts. Of course the first 2 were not my best efforts but after that I found a way to keep myself focused on the curves and they have fallen into place. I have only one, the last one I made, for myself. Every other one has been given as a gift. Mostly wedding gifts. I sew the arches and smaller pieces on the sewing machine but I do the majority of the work by hand. I love scrappy quilts and the DWR is a fantastic quilt to use up all those little pieces laying around in the scrap box. Julia

I have made 5 double wedding rings. It's not too hard just time consuming. It's the most requested pattern from customers. I use the John Flynn method when I made them.
