Has anyone used heat n bond for appliques. Gotten some that says NO SEW BOND. Done all the blocks and notice a small stain on 2 blocks, washed tham and some of the appliques where lose.Have used this bonding before and had'nt had this problem. Tried to sew around design and needle got gummie so thats out, what can be done to hold designs on when washed, I wash everything after quilts are finished. Any advice?

all i can say is to be sure it's ironed down well then wash and dry COLD, the heat is what usually loosens it up

I usually use sewable Heat and Bond for applique work. So far no trouble with it gumming up my sewing needle. The heavy duty Heat and Bond gums up a needle pretty bad so if you're not sewing, it's okay to use.

I have used it before, but I always blind stitch mine just for extra measure

All blocks have been done in small hearts with the heat bond,I'll try another block in cold water, Thanks to everyone

if you want to use heat n bond for applique you need heat n bond lite...the other is not made for sewing later...about impossible to get a needle through. the regular is good for wall hangings, items that do not get washed...or sewn

The lite you can sew thru...the heavy really gums up the needle and is stiff. You can't quilt thru this ...I tried! Ended up taking the needle out every few minutes and wiping down with rubbing alchol...

The bonding can also be affected by the amount of sizing or starch that is in the fabric when purchased. For the best results do pre- wash and do not starch.
Also heat and bond is particular on the temp used when bonding. If when the backing is pulled off prior to bonding to the next fabric the heat and bond is not a milky color , the temp on your iron is too high. Then when bonding do not use the cotton setting, using a lower poly setting. Heat and bond is a bit differnent in that it will be absorbed into the fabric if too hot and for too long.
Note :Heat and bond stains most batiks... permenantly both the light and the heavy. Ask me how I know this ... ARGGG.

Yes, make sure it's Lite...Heavy bleeds thru fabric's it's more for leather and heavy fabric. I use lite all the time with my applique's no problems.

more than likely you got the wrong Heat n bond!
For sewing/applique you need HNB LITE..the regular HNB says on the directions DO NOT SEW as it will gum up the needles.

I know, I sell a bolt of LITE a month easily!

I still prefer steam a seam myself, or misty fuse, but most like the HNB just fine!
