I had a request from a family member to finish a quilt that belonged to her mother. Everything is completed I just need to put some batting in it and then tie it for her. The only problem is she requested that the batting be heavy to match another quilt her grandmother had made her. I am not aware of modern batting which have a great deal of weight to them, so if anyone has some suggestions I would be grateful. I am not necessarily looking for batting just something to put inside the quilt that is heavy and not too expensive.

Thanks

I am not an expert and like you am unaware of anything that is as heavy as the old batting was. If the family member wants it that heavy, maybe you could consider using a double thickness of cotton batting. It would be heavy for sure, but I don't know if you'd be able to actually quilt it. Maybe someone with more expertise can help.

i know that sometimes they would use old blankets for the inside of quilts and that was probably heavy.any way for you to see the other quilt?

I actually have the other quilt right now. I think that it probably is an old blanket of some kind in the middle of it, but I can't really tell without taking it apart.

If you were going to tie it rather than quilt it, I don't see why you couldn't double up on the cotton batting. But, if that wasn't going to be heavy enough for them, then maybe you should find an old blanket instead.

I am going to tie rather than quilt. Any suggestions as to what type of blanket I should look for?

I know from one of my older blankets that my grandma made for me, she used a wool blanket inside it and maybe something else, it is quite heavy. I don't know where you could find one nowadays. azdesertrat mentioned looking for one at an Army Surplus store. I know I don't have any thing like that around me. Good luck! Let us know what you find and how it turns out! :)

I use a 10 oz batting, polyester,l when I want it thick. Im also use my Joann's 40% off coupon to buy it.

Maybe form a thrift or opp shop, that's where I get my old wool blankets from, it's amazing what some people throw away  . Might have to use one in my Grandsons quilt, have been looking for some wool batting, cause it's so much warmer, can't seem to find any  , used to be able to get it real easy.
