I have never really done applique before but I want to make a baby quilt and applique the baby's name on the back of the quilt. Is there a fusable fabric that I can use to fuse to my fabric then cut out the letters then fuse it to the quilt or do I I have to fuse to both the letter and quilt at the same time? I was thinking that if there is one like this that it would save time since I wouldn't have to cut fabric, then cut fusable I could cut it all at the same time. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

There is a product that is called Wonder Under or Heat and Bond and it is a paper backed fusible and you can do the process in two steps. There is also steam a seam 2 that until you iron the applique on it is repositionable. With the Wonder Under or Heat and Bond I would use the Lite. It will be softer and easier to stitch. I would also cut a piece of fabric and iron the fusible to the fabric and then cut your appliques out. So much easier that way and not as great a chance or getting fusible on your ironing surface. I would not apply anything like that directly to the quilt. I would design a label and then sew that on the surface of the front or back. :D

So you want to applique the name. Debbie has the answer.
I use fabric ink pens to sign and print the name of the person the quilt is for.

I have successfully used Wunder Under but never Heat and Bond. You apply it to one side at a time. With Heat and Bond my needles get really really gummy and I have to change more often. With Wunder Under (ask for it by name at your fabric store or Walmart if they still have fabric.)

Follow the directions on the plastic it comes with and use a tighter than usual blanket stitch.

OR

Embroider the baby's name on, likely be just as fast. :-)

Thank you all for your tips. I think that I'll try and get some wonder under. I'll post pics when I get this one done. It may be a little while. I have two other baby quilts to do first.

I use Steam a Seam. It works great! You peel one side and stick it to your fabric, cut out your pieces, then unpeel the other side and stick it to your quilt. Then press the pieces on to set. You are ready to add any stiches you want around the edges.

mareliba~I used to use Steam a Seam 2 and if I remember correctly, you could adhere it to your applique pieces, then you could stick those pieces temporarily to your background fabric, and still be able to move it around until you had your pieces where you wanted them. Then, when it was right, you would iron it onto the background permanently. I seem to remember loving that stuff!! I'll have to try to find it again. Heat-n-Bond Lite is fine, but it doesn't hold that well. I have to try to remember not to put too many pieces to my quilt at one time before I start to satin stitch them down. (like I've been doing on the quilt I'm working on right now :oops: )

Hmm, no JoAnn's near me. I think I got mine at Hancocks a long time ago, and we no longer have a Hancock's either. There may still be one in the next town over so I may check there. Thanks mereliba :)
