Help with a baby quilt
This sounds strange coming from me, but I have a strange question, so here goes:
I have a friend that wants to make a baby quilt, this will be her 1st quilt. GREAT! Yeah, another convert.. but here is the problem... she says she has in her mind a picture of what the quilt should be and it is this: A design by my choosing, simple but complicated looking. Ok, that's right up my alley,:D and she wants to put 'that soft stuff' (minky) on the back.. no prob, but I talked her out of it because of the price and we are going to go with polar fleece) But then she wants to bind the quilt with satin blanket binding WITH a ruffled edge! EEAAKK!! She wants to use yarn to tie the quilt.. ok with that as well, will do a few bar tacks and then go over them with yarn.. no brainer. I am ok with everything else, done it a million times, and I can handle the satin binding (will have to do that one myself, I can see that one coming) but ruffles. <sigh> Here is my question to all of you, how do I do that? Do I get satin yardage? Do I use extra binding? What would you use? I know that this will not be an easy binding to do. If we were using cotton on both sides, it would be as easy as to, but we are using polar fleece on the back and with the satin sewn to one side and turned, that is 3 layers and then with the polar fleece, that seam is going to be very thick! I may be able to stitch it by machine, but most likely by hand. What are your suggestions other than to tell her that we cant do a ruffle and just do a straight binding? |
I have seen packages of the wide satin binding at fabric stores. I think I would go with that if you can get it in a colour you can use. As for ruffled satin binding, it makes me shudder just to think about trying to do that on your quilt edge. I see the exact same problems that you do. Good luck and maybe someone else will have a good solution.

Where does the ruffle go? On the inside of the binding, like a flange? Or does she want the binding to be a ruffle? Then I would buy ruffled quilt binding. Comes with a binding portion and a ruffle that goes on the outside.

Good luck with the satin binding. I have seen some beautiful ones on BQ with ruffles and attempted it with poor results. I used a zig zag stitch to avoid pulling. Unfortunately it didn't work out for me. Perhaps others will post their hints on how to avoid that.

Ok, here is a rendering of the quilt as created in EQ7. 40 x 40 6 inch blocks.
What do you think? |
When I did a ruffled lace binding for a baby quilt years ago I rounded the corners to prevent having to turn the premade ruffled binding. This also gives a baby quilt a softer look I think.

She doesn't want much does she ? LOL Oh My ruffled and Satin YIKES
|
Personally I would ask her to reconsider the ruffle. With as many times as the quilt will be washed, the ruffle won't hold up.

The ruffled binding shouldn't be hard to make at all. Basically just make the ruffle, any width you want, sew it to the edge, and cover with a binding strip. Not that I've ever done it - LOL! Anyway, here's a description with pictures of how to make it. http://blackbird-designs.blogspot.co...d-contest.html

Think I might be a little lost, but why the binding? Is that a new thing to use both? Could you not just make a ruffle, sew to front and back wrong sides together, then turn it right side out and stitch down edge so it would not roll back?

That's a great site for the ruffled binding dunster! She makes is look easy but I think even I could do that on a quilt. I will have to file this away in case I need it someday. The other idea I thought of was, someone did a tutorial on QB about doing a scallopped/ruffled satin binding once? It was pretty.

I bet she's thinking of the ruffled satin binding you can find at some fabric stores. It is by Wright. I've seen it in only a few colors, but hopefully you can find it locally. If not, you can buy some on-line.

If you can't solve the problems with the ruffled binding, try a ruched binding. However, the ruffle sounds so pretty and feminine. I wish you luck.

Hope you can open this...picture of biding I always use and thinking it's what you are talking about. |
I cut the wide satin binding down to a smaller size one time and it worked. LOL --Get a new friend!

Check your local quilt shops. I have seen pre-made, ruffled satin binding at one of my LQS. I think it is made to coordinate with a line of baby type quilt fabric, maybe flannel. It came in pink or blue. You might find it on the internet if it isn't offered locally. IMHO, it would be worth the cost. Also, couldn't she find a minkee type fabric at Joanns or Hancock's, on sale or with a coupon, it would be so nice with the satin ruffle. If this is her first grandchild she might as well get used to spending more than she thought! Just kidding. Your design is very cute. Good luck to all!

Would love to see the finished product. Good Luck!
