Quiltingboard Forums - Help choosing Pac Intl Quilt Festival Class (Machine Quilting)

I am a new quilter and have just finished my 7th quilt. I tried to do some free motion quilting but can't seem to get the hang of it on my own. Due to my work schedule, evening classes are hard for me to get to so I thought this quilt show might be a great time to take a class.

There are 2 machine quilting classes at the same time so I have to choose one. I was hoping you guys could help me decide.

A three block wall hanging will be made that employs many different machine quilting techniques. You will quickly develop skills that will enable you to glide over your fabric without the help of your feed dogs. Confidence is the name of the game. Free motion quilting, meander quilting, stencil quilting and other innovative patterns will be used. Finishing techniques will be demonstrated. Beginner / Intermediate levels. Materials List: 1-3/4 yd solid white or pastel. Crib size regular loft batting. Vanishing purple marking pen, not fine line. Seam ripper, long ruler, pins, scissors. 2 spools thread to match fabric. Contrasting scrap thread for practice. Machine with tray, presser foot, darning foot. Machine quilting needles: 7.5 and 90. 4 mm double needles. Quilting gloves. Walking or even feed foot, optional. Before class cut from fabric and batting: six 13” squares (3 from batting); four 3-1/2” x 38” border strips (2 from batting); four 3-1/2” x 20” border strips (2 from batting); two 10” practice squares (1 from batting). Sewing machine required.

In this basic workshop, learn all aspects needed to master machine quilting. Start with a discussion on machine quilting supplies, including thread, needles and notions. Next, practice the basic techniques of straight line and free motion machine quilting on small quilt packages. After learning the skills to feel confident with these techniques, Sue will demonstrate how to successfully baste; package and machine quilt the actual quilt. Go home feeling confident to quilt any size and style quilt. Many quilts will be shown for inspiration. With Sue’s patient guidance learn all the basic skills needed to master machine quilting on your home sewing machine. Beginner / Intermediate levels. Materials List: Twelve 12” squares muslin. Six 12” squares cotton or cotton blend batting. 50 safety pins (I use size 0 or 1). Sewing machine needles- 80/12 & 70/10 microtex sharp or machine quilting 75/11. Cotton thread - off white and tan, 50 weight. Marking pencil - I use Quilter’s Choice brand, silver. Ruler - for marking straight lines. Rubber Gloves - kitchen dishwashing gloves, one size smaller than you wear for dishwashing. Basic sewing supplies - scissors or snips, etc. Optional, but a good idea - small cushion for extra height, extra light (extension cord). Machine Quilting: A Primer of Techniques is a companion book for this workshop - not required (available from instructor $25). Some thread for sale in class, $7. Bernina sewing machines and accessories provided by California Sewing & Vacuums.
