I'm trying to do a D9P on point with sashing around each block. I can't seem to wrap my brain around which blocks to put the sashing on and how to sew the next block to the one with the sashing. I know you don't put sashing around every block because that would make it too wide. I also can't figure out how to sew the blocks together once they are on point. How do you finish the edges? I've googled but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Then again I'm not sure what I'm looking for :shock: Can anyone figure out what I'm trying to do and explain it to me in plain english? :D

Can you make the sashing 1/2 the size you want and add it too all the blocks?

In order to put the sashing around every other block, 1/2 of the blocks need to be made larger - example finished block size 12" sashing 1" so 1/2 the blocks need to be 10" and to these you would add the sashing leaving the rest plain. That way when you add " them together all your blocks are 12"
Clear as mud?

Not sure you can do this with a D9P without losing the pattern of the quilt.

All4quilt did one and it looks very pretty.

You can sew the sashing on just like you do for horizontal or vertical rows but you lay out your sashed blocks diagonally & add a setting triangle onto each end. Half Squares on the top/bottom & sides. Quarter Squares on the corners. There are instructions on the internet for figuring out the size to cut the triangles but I usually measure mine and do it the old fashioned way each time I diagonally set a quilt. It's easier for me than looking for the instructions each time--LOL.

You can also lay out the blocks diagonally then sew in rows like normal with or without sashing.

The setting triangles give you lots of space to show off quilting designs.

I'm sure the math whizzes on this board can help you figure out the triangles once you decide on your block & sashing sizes.

EasyPeezy I misread what she wanted. She said "sashing around each block" and I took it the wrong way. Sorry

What I meant about it losing the pattern was you can't cut some of the block down to fit without losing the pattern. I guess I'd better take a nap...and them start all over. :oops:

that's why I googled and it took me all4quilt's picture. :-)

You can sew all of the sashings on the sides (like the pink shorter ones) and then sew the longer pieces of sashings on (like the green ones)

Ignore the cornerstones in the sashing.. it is just the way EQ does this, I would cut it in one piece, unless you wanted them.
