Hi,
My uncle is a disabled vet in a nursing home. I measured his bed last week - the top is 30 inches by 80 inches. The beds there sit really low to the ground. He has a storebought quilt on it now and it drags on the floor. Should I add 12 inches to either side or more? I have Marine fabric to use and would like to get started soon.
Thanks for your help in advance,
lots2do
PS Yes, I'd like to make a real quilt for him.

Probably not much more and Put His Name All Over It! I was a Nursing Home Administrator and it's the VERY BEST ADVICE I can give :) A very personalized quilt won't walk away as fast or easy. Also who washes the laundry- the family or the center? Their machines have to use hot water and are rough- they are required to so make the quilt accordingly. Just trying to help :)

I don't understand what you are asking. You say the quilt there drags on the floor. Are you making another quilt.
You need to measure the depth of the mattrass and from top of the bed to the floor to determine the width.

Name every where, my dad keep having his glasses (Borrwed) until they finally marked them.

That is very good advice on the personalization. I think the nursing home does the laundry but I can check on that. What kind of batting would hold up the best if they do?
Thanks, everyone,
I really want to make this a special gift,

very good advice. My Mom is in a nursing home and I made her a quilt. I stitched her name on it several places and when it got lost I told them it had her name on it. It was found because it was well marked. Mark the quilt WELL and in big letters.

Same with my Grandmother. All her crocheted afghans disappeared from her room. A quilt was made for her by her DIL just before she died. I didn't want to leave it at the home. I showed it to her and said I would keep it for her, she died days later. I'm glad I didn't leave it there. It was personalized and everything. Towards the end she wasn't even wearing her own clothes anymore. God knows where they went.

The quilt has kitties on it and it sits on my bed and my kitties sleep on it with me.

So- poly batting or not?
Thanks again,
