A friend of mine has bought a quilt at an Op Shop (2nd hand shop), and it has a label on it, it was made by a woman for her son.

We're wondering if the quilt was misplaced or lost and would love to try and find the maker.

The name is an unusual spelling, and New Zealand is not a large place, so a few phone calls have pretty much ruled out it the maker being in this country. We also don't have a long history, being a relatively young country, so the members of the family my friend spoke to pretty much knew every ancestor since the first boats came here, and this woman wasn't one of them.

So, we're searching further afield, thanks to the internet, and asking you guys!

The label has the son's name... and made by "Joan Parrish".
Just a stab in the dark, but maybe someone can help?

try zabasearch.com. They list a ton of contact information for finding people. Good luck and you are so nice to try to locate this person. Is it a very old quilt?

I haven't actually seen it, so I'm not sure.

We don't have the quilting history here that you guys do, so my first guess would be not particularly old.

You could list it on this site:

You might want to post information about the quilt on this website:

http://www.lostquilt.com/FoundQuilts.php

There are several websites that post lost/found/stolen quilts when use use "Google" search feature.

 A search in our national phone book here comes up with about 15 entrys for J Parrish. A search in the site above comes up with 450 results! LOL

I'll get in touch with the lost quilt website, thank you! :-)

Great idea Blue. Not sure if voting is compulsory in NZ, but here in Aus. it is...you could try the electoral roll, if not for the mother, for the son's name (she may no longer be alive). The lost quilt register is amazing! Unbelievable what happens to things. Anyway, keep us posted.

BlueChicken 09-23-2009 09:14 PM

I never thought of that, thank you.

The Electoral rolls aren't online here, so I'd have to go and physically search through them. Not knowing what area she's from, it would be a mammoth task, and I'm not quite that curious yet! lol

I've tried to send a message to the Lost Quilt website, but keep getting an error message, so will try again later.

:-)

I forgot to say, the label is dated 2004, which is why we wonder if it's been misplaced, it's not old enough to be an estate sale or something like that.
