I bit the bullet and forked out for 40 blocks of the uneven log cabin, it came today...

The print is shocking! It is completely squiffed, I lay my 8.5" template on each printed block and it is off by at least 1/4"!!

NOW I can pull and stretch it into shape, but my problem is this...will it twist the blocks out of shape after making and washing?

Anybody used this ?

Forgive me, but I am a little confused. Do you mean you bought 40 uneven log cabin blocks that someone else had already sewn? If so, I wouldn't suggest trying to pull them out. That would be a disaster. Unless they have to be 8.5, I would go 8" Other than that maybe someone else here has an idea.

This is a pre-printed foundation block image on cotton, similar to paper piecing, which remains attached instead of ripping it out, but it looks like it has been stretched as it has been printed making the blocks distorted...clear as mud? :roll:

I'd contact them to ask for a replacement.

I just finished a Grandmother's Garden using Foundation by the yard and it's not an easy product to work with. I have some Hunters' stars too, but I won't be buying anymore. Like you said, the blocks don't come out completely square and you have to fudge them:<

I'd send it back. You didn't buy it to have to make it work.

My guts are telling me to send it back, I have vilene that I could draw the blocks myself on to, but it was to save me time....

It cost me about £15, which I could spend on fabric, money is tight!!

About 12 years ago I used the french braid and the flying geese foundation by the yard and had no problem with them. If you are concerned about it being printed incorrectly, take it back to the store, or if you bought it online, send them an email explaining your problem. I'm sure they'd give you a replacement.

I have emailed them explaining my concerns, I await their response.

Geez Louise! I learned something today! I never heard of this before! Can you tell I live in an area with no quilt shop and no classes available! I so envy people who live near a nice quilt shop where many, many classes are available!

I learn everything on line tee hee!! I actually saw a topic where someone was selling this on here which is why I bought it in the first place LOL!

Could you take your "vilene" product to a local photo/copy shop & have them run them through their copier for you? Some of the fancier copiers can just place one block on the scanner & duplicate it as many times as would fill the page. I wouldn't try it on my home printer, but even the school district might do it for you? (for a nominal fee)

Sounds like alot of trouble. I would send it back.

I think the Vilene I have would be too flimsy, it really isn't difficult to trace on, just a bit time consuming when you want 40 blocks, but I don't have to do them all at once do I

i've used Benartex ones. i'd contact the shop!! if you end up using them, don't fret. finish them and if necessary add strips around the edges to trim them straight. the log cabins will be wonky/tilted but the sqs themselves straight.

stitch your blocks then press well and trim to size, you can cut them after stitching to make them nice and square. not a big deal at all really. you can sew your strips in place and make them look just right inspite of the off print.
that is a common problem with any printed panals, not just foundations. the print is put on the fabric then the fabric is wound on the bolts, and quite frequently are pulled out of shape a little. if we buy just solids/prints we do not notice it, but for pillow panals, foundations, ect the off-kilter lines show up more. you can tug it into place and press it well, should stay straight if you do that...there really is no problems after with them skewing again...your stitching will hold them in shape. a little starch will help too.

It is the Benartex ones, but I don't want to add sashings as I want to achieve the 'Barn Raising layout' which with it being uneven, gives you the lovely curves which I intend to applique in....great plans but seems to have fell at the first hurdle.....boo hoo!!

I agreee completely - I am sure you paid well for these, they should be to your expectations. Return them.

Cori, I haven't heard back from Cotton Patch, but after trying again to get them to square up by starching and ironing with no success, I have no faith in the product now, so won't be requesting a replacement, probably order more fine vilene and draw my own, at least I KNOW they will be square then LOL!

Personally I would send this back. Sorry it wasn't printed straight and you have this hassle...

I would starch these types of foundations pretty heavily. It will help hold the pieces in shape while sewing on them. JMHO :D:D:D

Thanks Amma, I received an email from the company today, she has checked her remaining stock and 'can't improve on the quality' which means that the whole roll must be badly printed, so I have requested to return them, hope she reimburses my postage to them too.....

I used that product a while back to make a quilt and said never again. I can't remember now exactly what the problem was.

There is another product out there called Quiltsmart for doing a lone star and I am afraid to try that because of the problem I had with the printed product you are talking about.

Have any of you folks used the quiltsmart product?

I used the Quiltsmart interfacing pattern for the Lone Star and I love how my quilt top turned out. It was a very easy way to make the Lone Star.
