I was ironing a large wall hanging top getting it ready to sandwich and quilt and I found what looks like a stain on one of the blocks. Should I put it in the wash, soak it?? what do i do?

It depends... how bad is the stain, do you know what it is, and what kind of fabrics have you used.
I'd be inclined to try and spot wash first, just carefully washing that one bit over the sink. |
fabric is a paler blue 100% cotton and I have no idea what the stain is, its a yellowish green. and I found another spot that is a darker blue looks like a ink pen leaked. I pre-washed all my fabric. this top is a UFO thats been packed away for a bit.

How gutting! I can't recommend a cleaner, ours are so different to what you have. But try a spot remover first, we have spray on stuff that's supposed to lift things like ink. Just do the stain, and rinse that section in the sink. If that doesn't work, maybe think about soaking the whole thing, being very careful to time it and not over soak. If it's ink, you may need to try several times to get rid of it. |
I would try the Oxy clean spot cleaner first, since it is non-bleaching. If the spot stays, can you add some appliques?

I'd soak the entire top overnight with a little color safe bleach and some enzyme stain remover. Until I knew the stain was out, I'd line dry it.

Try a new product that I'm just in love with--It is called Shout Wipes. They are little single use packages with a wipe that removes stains. I carry one in my purse all of the time for that "salsa" that always ends up on the front of my top. I've had great success with it. It is in the laundry section next to the other stain removers, in a smallish rectangular box. (I haven't found that it leaves a circle around where the stain was either.)

I found a couple of stains on the butterfly quilt top that I have posted in pics.
I know that treating ink stains with hairspray, then washing them is supposed to take them out.. On the butterfly quilt, I made a paste of some oxyclean, and rubbed it into the stain with a white wash-cloth. I then washed it in cold water, then hung it to dry and pressed it. It came out sparkly clean and you can't tell where the marks were.. |
oxyclean can work miracles. Try it. It may work.
