My son-inlaw has requested a cabin feeling, wildlife, cozy quilt. I do not know which pattern would be best, and which fabrics to use to get this feeling. Also, this is going to be a king size quilt, and he has requested to use minky for the backing. I have never used minky, is this going to be a pain when it comes to fmq or stitch in the ditch?

Oh boy.....are you going to quilt this yourself??? Minky on the back isn't easy to quilt...even for a lap quilt...I know I wouldn't want to use it for a king size quilt....actually...wouldn't want to quilt a king size myself no matter what is on the back. Good luck to you!

And as to pattern...almost any pattern would work...even something like a Yellow Brick Road...as long as you had the right fabrics...maybe some of the Holly Taylor prints...fabrics with woodsy textures....have fun shopping!

Go to quilterscache.com and surf a bit. You will find many blocks with a large center to highlight some of the beautiful animal prints out right now. Since this is a king size quilt there are some larger blocks also.

He surely doesn't know what he's asking, to put Minkee on the back of a king size quilt. Possibly steer him in another direction. Even flannel would be better.
I'm making my son an outdoorsy, cabin type quilt and I'm using homespun for the backing. It will become very soft after a few washings and is nice to quilt. |
I saw this and thought this would be easy peasy.
http://www.cabinplace.com/quilts.htm http://www.cabincreekbedding.com/products/rustic-quilts I googled rustic quilts and found all kinds of places to get ideas. The minky, for me, on especially that size of quilt is really questionable. Would be a pain in the lower extremities definitely!! Try to convince of a nice flannel backing instead. :-D |

My house is kind of cabin-y and I have made lots of throw quilts for having around as well as my bed quilt. I love the Holly Taylor fabrics by Moda as patchsamkim suggested and they turn out beautiful without being too cutesy/whimsical. There are regular cottons and flannels in that line and the flannels are wonderfully cozy. I'm with the rest on discouraging using Minkee on something that large.
