I was free motion quilting yesterday on my new Janome Horizon, and noticed dust on the clear plastic foot that I had on it, and decided to sweep it away with my right finger as I sewed. A terrible moment as the machine jarred and grrrd and I sewed right through the side of my finger. I managed to turn the machine off with my left hand by reaching across, all the time realising that the machine would just keep grinding away as the needle was out of alignment now and unless one instantly turns it off the needle will grind down and break off. I then wound the needle back up with the winder on the right hand end and removed it from my finger. Luckily it had missed the fingernail however it had driven the needle right through my finger and out the other side. Apart from feeling green for a while and stopping the bleeding I have survived.
The lesson of the story, it is just so easy to lose concentration for that one split second and do something utterly stupid like I did. Always turn your machine off before attempting to clean a foot, change a needle etc will now be my new motto!!! |
ouch...gives me cold chills to think about it. Is it sore?

Good reminder - with ALL power tools (snowblowers, saws, cornpickers, vacuum cleaners, etc) - to turn off before doing adjusting, etc. |

I am so sorry that happened! It happens in a split second too! I am glad you are going to be okay. Sit here on the couch by me and we will read the Quiltingboard. I will get the chocolates. Would you care for coffee? Tea?
Ask me why I am on the couch instead of sewing. Oh, it is not a large or deep cut. It is on the fatty part of my right thumb. I am right handed. Got it today when I was sharpening my rotary blade. I will never again daydream while I have a rotary blade anywhere near me. !!!! I hate it when I do something like that. Yep, happens in a split second. The mind wanders, Ouch!! Care for more coffee? |
I am OK today - however it brings up two things, this machine has an finger control to sew with if you take the foot off the machine. I had the foot control on luckily. However having broken needles in machines before the machine does NOT do a automatic shutdown when there is a problem. I am presuming most machines do not automatically shut down when there is a problem. Am I correct in this asumption??? Perhaps manufacturers might care to look at this problem and address this issue if at all possible.

Such a surprise when this happens ! I have fake nails and ran one to close to the foot and bam ! it cracked it and my nail down the middle !!!! ouch ouch ouch !!! Needless to say I've not gotten my finger or nail ! that close to the foot again !!! Hang in there and before you know it you'll be back in there sewing away ! gentle hugs

Sisters together by the sound of it:) Yes, quilting can be dangerous! It takes courage to quilt, ladies! Rotary cutters, machines, dropped pins, and I once drove one of those straight through my big toe and out the other side, it was a defining moment in bonding with my new stepson as he ran to the shed to get pliers and literally pliered the pin out of my foot. I loved him from then on! A nurse friend told me they often had patients with pins broken off in the soles of their feet. Yes, a coffee and chocolates sounds fabulous thankyou :) Care for more coffee? |

really sorry for your hurt, hope it is all better real soon. it could have been much worse. my father ran his hand under a press of some kind and lost half a thumb. my son (age 3) told him if he went to the doctor he could make it "all better". at least you can make it all better with some therapy fabric shopping. i think you have earned it. |

I did that lasr Summer when I made my lone star quilt. I was sewing the last part of the boarder on and bang! The needle went through my finger and I did not turn off the machine. I just took my foot off the pedal and yanked my finger out and it took part of my finger off so part of it is missing, but you can't tell now but there is a little bit of a scar and it has not been the same since then. So I now do not put my foot on the pedal until I'm ready to stitch. Good luck with it. It will heal up in a couple weeks or days. Mine took a few weeks. Huggies, Fay

Oh Fay - that must have been horrendous for you. I am sorry to hear your finger has not been the same since you injured it. I might add that my mother did the same thing using a treadle machine when I was a small child and still bears the scar on the end of her finger. So it is not only the electric ones that can do the damage.
Pass those chocolates and coffee on to Fay please, she sounds like she missed out on them the first time around. |
hope it gets well soon. that's one reason i worry about teaching children to sew. We have to watch them every moment , like we watch ourselves-not!

I think that a sit down on the couch with tea/coffee and chocolate sounds like a really great idea. However, please don't tell my husband this...I'm hoping to get the 7700 next spring and if he thinks it's dangerous....LOL |

Sorry--I feel your pain too. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. Just one question, when was your last tetanus shot? Might want to call your doctor and check on that.

I am a coward and I am still alive :) I put it straight in Dettol and held it there then covered it. It was a new needle. However, you are correct, and I am long overdue for a tetanus shot and happen to be visiting the doc tomorrow morning so will bravely bare my arm and have one, ouch, they hurt! Do not be put off the Horizon machine, it is fabulous! It is just that it decided to blood me! Not my week, I also stepped right on the back of a poisonous snake earlier in the week. I think I might need a little lie down as well as the chocolates :)

I ran over my fake nail too... got it just a bit too close.. luckily they were needed a trim anyway and it just chipped a piece off... I was able to file it down.. whew...! I KNOW better than to stick my finger near the needle... but I repeatedly do it anyway.... sigh.... Pass the chocolate? |
The needle bent badly, however the fabric was black where the crime occurred, thankfully. :)

I guess now you can put your machine under arrest. Last time I got a tetnous shot it did not hurt at all and to my suprize I did net get a sore arm either. I was lucky on that one. I'm about due for another one. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay

OMG I did that too. I yelled ow ow ow help. But by the time hubby got to me I had already "unsewn" myself.
Last week I cut my finger open with my rotary cutter. All I can say there is thank goodness I was making a quick cut or off to the hospital I would have went. No wonder hubby keeps yelling at me to get the pins out of my mouth! :) |

Recently, I've started pressing in the bobbin threading button when I thread the needle or clean under the presser foot. That way, I have the light from the machine, but without the worry of accidentally stepping on the pedal. |

Wings, I didn't miss the part where 'you stepped on the back of a poisonous snake' last week. When do we get to hear the rest of the story? We might need more than chocolates and coffee. !!!!!!!! There is plenty for everyone and the couch will fit us all.
I wanted to ask if your tetnus was current but I couldn't spell it or get it to come up in spell check. (Mine is.) I hope it is all better soon. |
Ouch!!!! I know first hand how painful it is to sew your finger with your machine, I have done this twice now and I was feeling really stupid the day I chopped off the edge of one of my fingers with my rotary cutter! Not only does it hurt terribly bad when we quilters injure ourselves but we feel dumb too. Luckily I have been fortunate enough during these moments not to bleed on any fabric. I hope you heal quickly.

I was on holiday when I took a walk along a lagoon and stepped on the snake, my husband said I looked like I was trying to walk in mid air once I saw what I had stepped on. The snake luckily was as shocked as I was and wriggled away into the undergrowth. I have stood beside a red bellied black some years ago, who had crawled up to a little pond in my back yard. He luckily took off too. The snake man I called in said to stomp loudly every time I came outside to send him away and that the snake would be well aware of all my movements as the pond provided water to drink and tree frogs for food - and the hedge near it provided shelter, perfect snake habitat!

I am so glad you were able to recover so quickly. I did the same thing "once" and couldn't get the silly needle out but I finally was able to take needle out of the machine and get free. Just like it just happened and it has been a long time ago.
