Help with Marking on Black Fabric
I am planning to begin a wool applique on a black background fabric. What is you best method for marking the position of the applique on black fabric since a light box is not helpful? Thanks everyone.

an over-lay sheet-
it is a piece of (firm) plastic- you draw the designplacement on the plastic- lay it on the black fabric- then place the pieces underneith it in their place- pin in place- then remove the (placement sheet)you can put line up marks on the plastic- fold the fabric and lightly crease to find the center- draw the placement guide in a color that will show up on the black--yellow works well |
Thanks for posting this, as I am getting ready to mark black fabric also. :)

dritz makes a white pen that works really great. when you first use it you can't see the marks but if you wait a few seconds they show up.

The white pen that takes sometime to appear is by Clover. I use it all the time.

I use a yellow chalk pencil - no waiting, easy to see, and just wipe away when finished.

I use PMC (Perfection Master Crayons) whenever I am marking something dark. The iron makes the lines disappear! I got these in a box of serger thread cones from the guy that I bought my serger from. I've never bought them. I have the white ones but considering getting some colors to mark on light fabric.

Have you tried the light box? Years ago I used a light box with black fabric and if I remember correctly, I could still see the lines underneath.

Another way to transfer a design onto fabric that doesn't require a light box is to lay a piece of bridal tulle over your paper design. Trace the design with a permanent marker (since you're working on black, you might want to try red or another color that you can see against the black.) Now lay the marked tulle over your project and trace again with the fabric marker of your choice. The ink, chalk, pencil, whatever, will go right through the tulle and onto your project!

A thin piece of soap works well to mark black fabric. You could mark the applique on freezer paper, cut it out, press it to the black wool, draw a line around it with a white marker, soap or stitch with a white thread around the design.
