How do I know what size to cut fabric without a pattern? For example, how can I figure the size of a four square patch if I want to put it next to a square (like a 6 inch or something)?

I hope this makes sense. You guys have helped me so so so much as I begin this wonderful quilting journey.

Since I am mathmatically challenged, I would make the 4 patch first, then cut my squares to match that size...

If you're putting it next to a 6 inch square (finished size), you divide 6 by 2 (because there are two squares for each 6 inch side) to get 3", then add the .5" for seam allowances. Cut the four patch units 3.5".

That's the idea! Make the most pieced blocks first then cut the alternate squares.

Cut your squares for 4-patch @ 3.5".......your alternate sq. will likely be cut in the 6.5" range.
OR
Cut your squares for 4-patch @ 4".......your alternate sq. will likely be cut in the 7.5" range.

each seam is 1/4" -- so 6" divided by 2 for a 4 patch is 3" + 1/4" for 1 seam - so your small 4 patch squares would be 3 1/4" for a 6 in larger square

Always start with the size you want it to finish at (after all the seams are in the quilt).

So ... for a 6" finished 4P block ....
* each of the 4Ps would be 3"x3" finished
* add on 1/4" for seams on each side
* each of the 4Ps would be 3-1/2"x3-1/2"

You can do the same for 9Ps .... and most anything else! Keep this, and you're on your way to designing your own patterns, or looking at a photo and figuring it out!

forget the math initially and draw what you want on graft paper and measure.
