I haven't posted here before, so bear with me. I am making a quilt and want to add three borders. First border is 2 1/2 ", second border is 1 1/2", outside border is 4 to 6", haven't cut it yet. What I need help with is, do I sew all three borders together and then attach to quilt top, and then miter the corners or do I attach borders one at a time mitering each corner as I go? I have not made mitered corners before. Any help would be appreciated.

What I did when I did mine was one border at a time. the secret of course is starting and stopping 1/4" from the corner. then you yu add the second border you can mark on the seam of the first....I think there is a youtube tut...will see if I can find it for you....

I sewed all three of my borders together then mitered them. Not necessarily an easy thing to do but doable. Love the results

I find it easier to sew them together first. Then you only have to do one miter instead of three and I think the finished product looks much neater.

I sew mine together, put them on the quilt top and then miter.

Ditto! With multiple borders I always sew them together first then miter them on.

ETA: We have a great tutorial on the board for mitering corners that PittsburghPam did. Search for it you will find it.

If I have multiple borders, I sew them all together first then miter. Has made my life much easier in the long run.

you know I never even thought about sewing all the borders together and then doing the mitering. Makes good sense...which is what this board is all about...not theory but what actually works, what you have done and what you have experieinced...the practical side....good old what used to be called "Farm House sense"...goodness is that old, I think I heard that from my grandmother....Thank you to everyone here who has put their two cents in...it is indeed priceless.........:-)
