Help! Need Fabric Requirements
 

Have been looking all over the Internet to see how much fabric I will need to make a two color king chevron quilt, with no luck. See lots of tuitorials but no fabric amounts. This is the kind of quilt my future
DIL picked out. Thanks so much for any help.

If you know someone who has Electric Quilt 7, you can probably use that to figure out how much fabric is needed. Also, when you say two color quilt, do you mean that you want to use only two fabrics, or a variety of fabrics in shades of the two colors?

Otherwise, do a web search for a chevron quilt pattern - maybe you can find a king size pattern.

In order to work out the amount of fabric you need a pattern.
The chevrons measure length and width ,how many using either l or w fit into 40 inches. The other measurement is amount .ie chevron 21/2 inch by 5inh. Using 21/2" means go into 40" by 16. Now requirements 5" down one row of cuts.
Then work out for your quilt.
Hope you understand. Work each shape at a time and then add them all together.

need to know the size of blocks (chevrons) you plan to make? then adding borders? measurements of finished quilt? number of blocks needed before borders...I find it easiest to sit down with a sheet of graph paper- figure out the block, all of the measurements - then do the math to find what I need for the whole quilt- graph paper is my best friend when it comes to designing a quilt.

There are many variations of chevron. Without pattern and other measurants can't give good answer. Do search for pattern, provide measurements then ask specific questions. You will get good responses.

over simplified - calculate length times width of the desired finished size (ie 106x106) to get total square inches of the top. Divide this number by 1512 which is the number of square inches in a yard to get total yardage in the finished top. Since you want to use two colors, divide your number by 2 to get yardage for each color. so 106x106=11236 divided by 1512 = 7.43 yards. Now, remember, you need to add more for what you lose in seams and waste. If it were me, I would buy 5 yards of each color for this size quilt. Borders? add extra. To calculate for borders, figure out the total linear inches needed for the border, divide by 40 and this will tell you how many cuts of fabric you need for the border. then multiply this number by the cut width of the border for total yardage needed.

If you're math challenged, once you get your piece dimensions, you can plug them into one of the online fabric calculators. I've always liked this one, but there are several out there.

Try the book called All-in-One Quilter's Reference Book. There are several charts you can use to determine yardages needed.
