As most of you know I'm still new at this and I need some help. I'm getting ready to put my quilt together. I know how to sandwich but I can't find any info on what size the back and batting should be compared to the top. I haven't decided if I'm going to put a 2" binding around it or use bias tape, so I need to know what to do for both of them. All I have been able to find when I google is how to sandwich. It says nothing about how much extra fabric and batting I need.

Are ya gonna be hand quilting it? Machine quilting? Tying?

For any of them I make sure to have at least 3+ inches of batting & Backing sticking out on all 4 sides of the top.
Some long arm quilters (If you're going to have someone else do it) ask for at least 4-6 inches on all sides.
This varies and you should ask them first how much they want extra.

As for the binding either will work you don't add binding until you're done quilting/tying then you sew the edge of the binding even with the edge of your quilt fold it over to the back and stitch down. You can do this by hand or machine.

I' still new too, but I think you need to have the batting and backing two to three inches larger all the way around the quilt. Once quilted you trim down to the quilt top size.

Ok, still confused. After it's quilted, I cut it all down to match the size of the top and then add the binding? What I'm not getting is if I cut it all down and put the binding on it doesn't seem like there will be any batting in the binding. When putting the binding on when it's all even seems to me I would be covering up to much of the quilt top on all sides.
Am I making any sense?

The binding usually doesn't show too much just on the edge of the quilt unless you want a much wider binding. There will be batting in the binding too even though you will be trimming the backing and batting.

The binding is wrapped around the edge of the quilt to the other side. In doing this, there is a layer of batting under the binding. It should fill the area under your binding quite nicely if you wrap the binding around the sides snugly, but keeping the layers flat.
Are you confusing the binding, the very last step, with a border of fabric? Borders are added before quilting, and before measuring your backing and batting.

Look for the section that says 'Binding the Angel' She is very precise, and uses a lot of Elmer's School Glue instead of pins. The glue is actually a thick starch, so isn't permanent, but holds while you get the stitching done, then will wash out later. Under the beginniers section, she also has an excellent set of videos on how to put together a quilt, then add borders and mitre the cornes, again free.

You are sewing on the binding to the front of the quilt, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. It is the same as if you were adding on sashing, more blocks or borders. You are hand sewing the binding onto the back of the quilt.
When you cut fabric for binding, say 2 1/4 inches, you then fold it in half, wrong sides together and iron the fold. Now it is just barely over an inch wide. When you sew it with a 1/4 inch seam allowance to the front and wrap it around to the back of the quilt, it will be approx 1/2 inch wide on the quilt back
