Do I have to quilt the border? It is only about 2 1/2". If so, tell me something easy, please.

No, you don't have to do anything. It is your quilt. :-)

Most of the batting I have seen requires stitching only every 4 inches. What does your batting say? You are also stitching the binding so that will hold the batting in place. I would vote "no" for quilting the 2 1/2 inch border!

you can easily do a zig and a zag in the border, this is just back and forth.
Or a cursive l and e (over and over again) stitch in the ditch on each side. Enjoy. sue |
I'm having the same quandary over sashing. I think it needs something but it's a diagonal set quilt so any continuous design has to be spot on. The blocks are quilted right up to the sashing so there is a 2" or less area that is unquilted between all 16" blocks. The blocks are quilted with an Orange Peel. The setting triangles have a waterlily motif. The first border is a similar but simpler continuous waterlily and the final border is the fancier waterlily also continuous. For now, the quilt is loaded on the frame so I see it every time I walk into my office or past the window outside. Eventually a solution will come to me.
Back to your issue. How big is this quilt? Can you post a pic? What kind of other quilting designs are going on in the quilt and how close do they come to the border? |
At 2 1/2 inches I would quilt it if I wanted to , or not if I didn't. It should be fine either way.

I would say that it depends on how much quilting you have in the rest of the quilt, if it's fairly closely quilted, closer than 2 1/2, I would do some quilting in the border so that it lays flat and doesn't puff up or get wavy. You could always just do straight or decorative stitching 1/2 inch from each edge, that would be simple, or if you prefer fmq, you could do a wave or a free form cable.

can you just do a repeating design every five or six inches something that ties in with the quilt I have done that it looks great
