High Shank? Low Shank?

OK, I'm tired of breaking the high-priced-cheaply-made fmq feet on my Pfaff Quilt Expression 2.0. The spring action results only from the tension of a plastic piece, and I know there has to be a better way as I see plenty of generic fmq feet listed for high shank or low shank machines.

Question: Is my machine high shank or low shank? I'd love to try using an all metal foot, if I just knew which one to get.

Does anyone have the answer? TIA

Thanks, BellaBoo. My machine measures 1/2", so I now know to try a low shank foot. Now if only my "thumb" screw (it's an inset requiring a screw driver) will hold the foot in place. I guess there's no time like the present to try the generic foot. Any recommendations for one brand over another?

you might be able to order an actual thumb screw to make easy to change

Most all thumb screws have the same thread. Try one from another machine. I keep all thumb screws from cast off machines. They really come in handy when someone loses one. I changed the one that I had to use a screwdriver to turn to one that had the screw head. Any sewing machine shop should give you one free of charge. Most hardware stores have them. Ace gave me one free. Said just come back and shop.

Thanks, everyone, for all the good advice. The screw for the snap on foot attachment came out quite easily with the screwdriver, so I'm pretty sure I can do this now. And I have found what appears to be a more durable short shank free motion foot for half what I paid for the Pfaff accessory foot. When my retirement check gets here on the first I will be ordering it. Unfortunately I had to buy the expensive foot today to finish 3 feet of border fmq. But this project has been a WIP for a year, and it is now ready for the binding. Yea!!!
