I've had my machine for about 7 years and have always used the default horizontal spindle for the thread. Now I've just realised :oops: that I can also choose a vertical spindle. Any advantages/disadvantages to horizontal/vertical? Any situations in which the vertical option might be of particular use?

I prefer the vertical spindle, just because the spool of thread stands upright when winding bobbins and sewing. I'm sure it doesn't really make a difference, as I have used both types, but, I just prefer the vertical. I assume it is only a personal preference thing or maybe just whatever comes with your machine.

I have to say that I had never realised that there is a difference and I didn't see any difference in my machine stitching.....but that's just me. |

My bernina is really fussy about about which spindle to use. I couldn't figure out why I was having problems with my thread until I read my manual.:) (Who reads those anyway!)

Very interesting. I have noticed that sometimes I have to change the way I have the spool set up because of bad stitchng or breaking. Now I know why.

It all depends on how the thread comes off the spool. Those that are cross wound should be used verticaly and those that are not are used horizontaly. It makes the thread come off the spool easier and with less tension on it. It does make a difference in your tension.
