I have worked on an applique quilt for about a year, so I have all the fabrics I have used in one big box so they are together when I work on it again. My dilemma is that I forget about those fabric when I work on something else.

I am going through all my fabric and sorting into colors and putting all the small pieces on those boards so I can see them at a glance. I have boxes sorted by colors.

Question is! Should I put these fabrics from the UFO back in the main fabrics or just keep them all boxed up? There are some yardage there that won't ever be used up on this one quilt. What would you do?

I would keep them separate until the applique quilt is finished. If you don't, sure thing that you will need that certain color when you go to finish the quilt and that will be the one color you don't have. Been there done that.

You know the old saying out of sight out of mind. If you keep them boxed up they will never get used. Just my opinion!

Once you are done with you quilt donate what is left. There are people on this board that do lots of charity work if you don't know someone

I would put them on the boards, but then I would not put them side by side. that way you can see what you have but will not use it for something else. hope this makes sense.

I would probably keep them with the project. You may run out of one and not be able to find it. If you've lots more than you think you'll need, you could just cut what you'll need and keep with the project and put the rest in with your stash fabrics.

I agree (or finish the UFO)

I would keep all the fabric together for your applique quilt until you finish. I have seen too many people looking for a couple of inches of fabric because they misplaced it, cut wrong etc. I love using the plastic zipped bags for comforters, blankets to keep things together and the bags are see through.

I keep all my fabric for one quilt together. When the quilt is finished, the leftovers are allowed to 'get out jail free' and join their other friends on the shelves

I would keep all the fabric together until the quilt top is completed then assess and determine if any would be needed on backing, pillow shams or other accessories.
