I'm just sick about what I think I did last week. I put a quilt top and backing (just needed batting!) in a plastic bag in my van to drop off at the quilter. Didn't end up going, and left bag in the van for return trip. Guess what? I can't find the bag with the top and back and I think I may have tossed it! I feel so sick! :( Not just at the money I've lost, but at the loss of a gift for my brother. I keep praying it will turn up. Has anyone else done anything like this? I will NEVER EVER EVER put a quilt in a plastic bag from a discount store! I feel like I left a kid at the mall. Thanks for letting me vent!

sparkys_mom 09-02-2011 04:43 AM

I hope it turns up, but I have to say I've done things like that. :(

sueisallaboutquilts 09-02-2011 04:45 AM

Ohhh, I feel so badly for you! Did you check your garage?
I'm so sorry :( Don't beat yourself up though- it was an innocent mistake.

annthreecats 09-02-2011 04:46 AM

So sorry. I hope you find your quilt top.

Talk about stupid. I once threw my purseinto a huge dumpster. I didn't find out until many days later that I could have called the number on the dumpster and gotten it back. I had to cancel credit cards, get a new driver's license, and ATM card. What a mess. Boy did I feel dumb.

thomp116 09-02-2011 04:48 AM

A gentleman in our area tells a horror story of someone who put their quilt in a green garbage bag...you guessed it - out in the trash it went.

Stitchnripper 09-02-2011 04:48 AM

Oh dear, sorry to hear. I have done something similar very recently. My friend brought me an antique quilt someone made for her grandmother. I was to take it to my quilting class because the instructor repaired old quilts. I remember my friend leaving it on my kitchen table. That's the last I saw of it. I felt and still feel so awful. She was nice about it, but still, I feel like I let her down. Hubby and I can't remember anything else except her leaving it on the table. We speculate it got thrown out. So I do feel your pain.

purrfectquilts 09-02-2011 05:17 AM

Oh my; how sad for you. That would freak me out.

kewlquilts 09-02-2011 05:18 AM

Thanks for your stories and sympathy. Its comforting to share with people who understand. You guys are the best!

jaciqltznok 09-02-2011 05:29 AM

have heard this type of story so many times over the years...best to get a CLEAR bag from bedding and use that...or even a dry cleaners bag that you can put over a hanger!

sweet 09-02-2011 05:30 AM

Hope it shows up for you!

Tartan 09-02-2011 05:38 AM

Could've, would've, should've, yes I've had a few of those moments too. It is hard to stop blaming yourself but you'd forgive someone else wouldn't you? So forgive yourself and I hope it turns up.

emmamarie 09-02-2011 05:40 AM

so sorry.yes I know how you feel.saying a prayer for you.

ScrappyAZ 09-02-2011 05:44 AM

I've never lost or misplaced a quilt, but have had my share of "duh" moments. Many years ago, my daughter and I went to a craft fair and purchased home-made Christmas ornaments for her teachers and sports coaches. We sat down at a picnic table for lunch, and after we were finished eating, I tossed the paper plates, utensils and napkins into the trash...and you guessed it, I also tossed the bag of ornaments into the trash! I didn't realize what I had done until after we returned home, and I couldn't find the bag of ornaments.

dunster 09-02-2011 05:45 AM

Take a deep breath, calm yourself, and look again. Chances of your throwing it out are very remote. If you were throwing out bags, you would have checked to see what was in them first. The quilt is most likely there, somewhere, waiting to be found. When you're in a panic to find something, it hides.

Candy Apple Quilts 09-02-2011 05:47 AM

oh, I'm soooooo sorry. :|

wvdek 09-02-2011 05:47 AM

I feel your pain.
We went on a camping trip for two weeks one summer, so I put all my good jewlry in a brown paper bag (you remember those don't you?), gave it to my sis to watch and when we came home my sis gave it back to me. I put it down on the kitchen table by the back door and... yep, DH took it out to the trash. To this day - 26 years later, he is unable to own up to it. It was over $2000. in jewelry I had been buying since I was 16. Lots of OOAK silver and turqouise. Oh well, some dump is well dressed.
Hope you find your bag. A lesson for us all here.

kayahr 09-02-2011 05:48 AM

I've learned my lesson on this one too! Nowadays, green or black trash bags are only for trash. I bought several boxes of clear plastic bags for carrying large items. They are probably 30, 33 or 39 gallon bags.

Maggiesmom 09-02-2011 05:50 AM

Not as devestating as a quilt, but just yesterday my husband picked up a box with a brand new pair of shoes in it and through it in the dumpster just before the druck came to pick up the trash....said the box felt empty...didn't bother to look. Thank goodness they had been on sale and I hadn't paid full price.

blueangel 09-02-2011 06:00 AM

I hope it shows up.

mhansen6 09-02-2011 06:03 AM

Are you sure someone didn't reach into your van and take it? I can't believe you threw it out. I really hope it turns up. We spend so much time and money on these quilts it sure is hard to lose them.

Nanaquilts44 09-02-2011 06:10 AM

I am so sorry this has happened to you. I think when we are busy we don't always focus on what we are doing.

susie-susie-susie 09-02-2011 06:27 AM

A girl (young) I used to work with was going on a week long cruise and bought a whole weeks worth of clothes. Had them in a plastic garbage bag. Her mom threw them out. Don't put anything but garbage in a plastic garbage bag, and look before you toss. Helpers aren't always helpers.
Sue

Raggiemom 09-02-2011 06:33 AM

I'm so sorry. Are you sure you tossed it though? A quilt would have given some heft to the bag. I hope you find it. I bought a roll of stamps last year and put them in one of the Walmart bags I had just bought. Unfortunately, I took all the Walmart bags to recycling so goodbye $44 worth of stamps!

clem55 09-02-2011 06:35 AM

EX- DIL swore that I hadn't sent home a bag containing the kids soccer shoes. I knew that I saw her toss them into the back of her SUV( she was angry at the time). She finally found them, they had slid between the seat and flat area of the back. So, check anyplace there can be a space in your van. ( PS, she didnt apologize either,LOL)

And to a much lesser extent I did it yesterday! I had two house keys made at Home Depot - later in the day I was emptying the bag that had the keys - but there is only one. Now where on earth did the second one go? I did my own check out and definitely scanned both keys and put them into the bag. Grrrrrr!

Maia B 09-02-2011 06:54 AM

All I can say is SORRY. {{hugs}} as you've read, others have done the same thing, don't beat yourself up.

khurtdvm 09-02-2011 09:06 AM

My DH doesn't like a lot of "cutesy" decorating items, like tree skirts and such. When we got married, I showed him a pattern book I had of crocheted tree skirts. We mutually selected one that he loved, and I spent months crocheting it. It lasted through several years, including a move from Illinois to Mississippi, but our first Christmas back in Illinois, we couldn't find it anywhere. And then he had a horrible thought. He'd bought a new artificial Christmas tree and burned the old one....and he's betting that the Christmas tree skirt was in the old tree box, that he didn't open before burning it. :( Five years later, I still haven't had the heart to make a new tree skirt.

bearisgray 09-02-2011 09:11 AM

I can relate -

I do hope it turns up!

Linnie 09-02-2011 09:15 AM

Hope you find it. Keep us posted

Connie in CO 09-02-2011 09:38 AM

I bet someone got into your van.Was it locked where did you have it parked?Connie in CO

BellaBoo 09-02-2011 09:39 AM

Oh! Stress is the cause to not remember at all what you did with something right in your hands. Your mind was going too fast thinking of other things.

I have never sit a trash bag anywhere in the house just to sit there. Plastic bags from stores get thrown away as soon as they come in the house. I don't like or keep plastic shopping bags (or wire hangers, lol) If one is sitting out DH or the kids will know it's odd and will ask what is that?

quilter1430 09-02-2011 09:47 AM

I have heard of many horror stories like yours, so I never, ever put quilts in a bag where I cannot see the contents. I'm so sorry! You must be sick about it.

IAmCatOwned 09-02-2011 09:49 AM

I hope it turns up, but yeah, I would feel sickened by the loss. I never have put quilts into any kind of plastic bag. I have a quilted tote bag specifically for large quilts that are going anywhere out of the house. I learned from someone's loss years ago never to put them into garbage bags. Sorry you had to learn this lesson so painfully. :(

tmg 09-03-2011 03:31 AM

Sorry about that. Maybe it will turn up.

subyz 09-03-2011 03:35 AM

Clear bags are definitely in order! My nephew's 3 girls did their 'school shopping' for new clothes on the way to their cottage. They put it all in a garbage bag for 'safe keeping' among the fishing gear, suntan oil, food, etc... (You've probably anticipated where this is going!) Yep, on the way home they run by the transfer station to toss the 'garbage'...

When I first moved into this house, the seller paid to have a water treatment system istalled. I was left with a wonderful package of the manual and lots of maintenance info. Long story short, went to sit down a few days later and read it. Couldn't find it. Only thing I could ever figure out is that it had gotten mixed in with the newspapers and put out with the recycling. Fourteen years later and never found it. That was $2500 worth of info. Now when I put anything away I use a clear plastic bag instead of trash bags or store bags. Am always afraid of doing what you did. I sure hope you find it. I also try to keep my auto free of trash so things like that don't happen.

I do things like this all the time! I think our house has a "Black Hole". Things disappear and rarely reappear. Good luck in finding your quilt.
