I have a pattern, with rather a long list of fabrics. I personally think the pattern is beautiful (or else I wouldn't be asking), but I really want it to be BIGGER than the 44" the pattern gives me...

I want it more like 88", now when you want to double a pattern, don't you need to multiply the original yardage by 4? Because I don't want two of them, I want it twice as big?

My DH tells me to calculate the square inches for the pattern, times that by two and then turn it back into lateral feet, and that seems to be the hard way... Help? Anyone?

If you are going for 88x88 then you would need to times in by 4 because you are doubling it in 2 directions.

That's what I tried to tell DH I even showed him with a paper towel, but he was sure I should do it the long way. :shock: :D Thanks

Explain it to him this way:
44x44=1936 sq in
88x88=7744 sq in
7744÷1936=4
It's a guy thing. :wink:

Now if I can just explain away why what was once a cheap no big deal project, is suddenly 4X the money. :!:

So this is crazy, taking the pattern and x4 tells me I need to buy 22 yards! I know they're in the business to sell fabric, but really?

So I brought my DH back in and he drew it out so I really only need 11, crazy stuff!

I quite frankly have no idea how to calculate anything...I guess and make from what I have available...but I did pick up the following link in case I ever decided to get with the program. Hope this is helpful to you.

I add a little extra for mistakes on my part and on the part of the pattern maker. I do this on all the quilts I buy fabric for and try to on any kits I buy. I sometimes change my mind about a color and sometimes I will buy an alternative color for the quilt. It is not like you can have to much fabric.
I made the mistake when I started quilting that I did not buy yardage of fabric I really like and I am really not much of a scrap quilter unless it is a sampler quilt.

Oh well Live and learn.
