How do I enlarge this
Can anyone tell me how to enlarge this pattern into a wallhanging?
http://www.quiltmaker.com/patterns/d...html?idx=13924 I would love to make it for a wedding gift. |
Can you keep it the size it is and make it bigger with a border ? maybe add the names and date to the border to make it look like it was meant to be that way ?

How big do you want it to be?
|
As an example-and because the block is 12", if you want it 36 x 36 wouldn't you multiply each of the measurements by 3? The solid squares would be 3 1/2" x 3 1/2 ". The 1/2" for each of the squares and rectangles represents the seam-1/4" on each side. So you don't multiple that.

Just add borders around it until you like the size of it.

Not sure what size you need the wall hanging to be but for a 26 1/2 by 24 1/2 you would use 2 1/2 inch squares to replace the 1 1/2 inch squares. For the second measurement just double the whole number and keep the 1/2 inch, for example if the original says 3 1/2 inches you would need 6 1/2, etc. You could then add a border or two if you need it larger. Hope that helps.

as they use 1 1/2 squares my sugestion would be to use 2 1/2 squares or 3 1/2 depending on how gig you want to make it.

This block is based on raw sizes of 1 1/2 ", as litacats points out. The math is tedious, but fairly simple. For every measurement, subtract 1/2", multiply to whatever size you want. I think 2 would work as a multiplier, although 3 or even 4 would work well. Then add back the 1/2" for seam allowances. Frankly, I think your idea of enlarging for a wall hanging is much nicer than making smaller blocks for a quilt. Be sure to show us your results. (also remember, even though the pattern is a freebie, if you show it, you need to credit the original designer.)

Am I adding wrong or would this turn out to be a 12" x 13" block not 12"? I count 13 1" finished rows sideways but 12" longways.

You dont say what size it is now and what size you want it to be. Therefore can't do the math. You need to give details as to what it is and what you want it to be. looks like you just might make the trips wider but don't know unless one knows the current basic size/math
