How do I get the center of 4 blocks to lay flat? Do you cut somewhere and flatten or what?

Press. Also, If we call the upper 2 A, B and the lower C and D, Sew the A-B seam and the C-D seam. When you go to put the 2 pairs together, notice the seam allowances form the 2patches you just made. Pin the one on top so it reaches the needle first and the one (which you won't be able to see because it is against the feed dogs) should be moved so that the raw edges are towards you. This way, the seams are not pushed apart by the feed dogs and you don't have a huge lump unter your needle.
Did that help? |
Sewnsewer2, you indicated you found the answer to your question however I wanted to add this and see if it was helpful to you. In Billie Lauder's first Quick Quilt Tips book, she showed when you made your four patch...you then twist the middle of the four patch (where all four fabrics intersect) to actually create a tiny four patch in the center which makes the middle of the four patch lay flat and without bulk after pressing them. I have used this method for years and it works great. I hope I am explaining this correctly and you understand. You just twist that intersection of the four patches around a bit and flatten it out and press. Hope this helps you and is actually answering your original question.
