I am wanting to make a Journal for the Farmer's Wife Sampler to keep track of what I am doing. My question for all of you wonderful quilters is what information do you really put in there? This is my first time wanting to do a journal and I've done a little research with google about this. I want to try to make a page for each block.
I figure I will put the title of the book with the author.
The name of the block
Picture of the completed block with the date that it was completed
Maybe some fabric swatches of what I used

But what else do I need to put in there? I want to make sure I have all the important info for if my daughter or someone else is interested and so that I can look back if I were to ever have a problem or want to make another block exactly like it.
Please let me know what you guys think

Any significant problem you had in constructing it?

An undertaking like this, it may be fun to chronicle a little bit about what was going on in your life while you were making this quilt... Your kids/grands may get a kick out of reading about it one day. Even if it is little things that have happened, it would make a great read to those who aren't as "into" quilts as others.

I always have thought that if a journal would have accompanied the DJ quilt, it would have been a great read :D

I like the idea of something that happened in your normal life being added to the journal... that is definitely something that will be added.

I put date started, date finished, type of fabric, batting, etc.

I also leave the bottom half of the page blank for any notes, stories, etc about the quilt. I love going back and reading these!

I also put a picture of the quilt and a small swatch of the fabrics. A few pics of me making it, sometimes.

My journal so far includes swatches of fabric, pictures (when I get them printed), a thank you card from one of the recipients, descriptions of who the quilt goes to plus the basic quilt demographics.

Name of pattern; materials - fabric names, thread, batting; dates started/finished/quilted (if not a rag quilt).

Also comments about the process and what I learned from the project.

I'm a very new quilter so I am currently caught up.

I'm also blogging about the learning process - so I have the electronic journal that I can refer back to as I write.

I found a couple sample journals on google and decided that I wanted to do mine less formally than some but also try to be consistent.

I really like Amma's idea. I've read wonderful journals from past generations about their lives while they are quilting.
Such wonderful glimpses of a time long ago.

I also put the size(s) of the blocks, and the size of the completed quilt; fabric designer and name of the fabric (you can find this on the selvege ends of the fabric)

This is a great thread! I never thought about making the journal with so much info but I love that idea. Thank you!
