How far would you travel for fabric ?
I am working today in Exeter (which is about 100 kms from where I live), have just stopped for lunch and my mind wandered to the quilt I am making for my daughter..... I am in search of that one dark fabric that will make it pop.....so I switched on my computer and searched quilt shops in Exeter........oh, and I got so excited.....up popped this amazing looking shop "quilts and calico" .......I just love finding new shops to explore........sad to say however I probably won't make it there today.....on reading the address more carefully I realise it is based in Exeter, Ontario in Canada.......and I am based in England, UK......I am crest fallen !!!
|
Probably not as far as you would have to go for that shop. My girlfriend and I did drive up to Dallas, TX about 5 hours north for us for a Texas State shop hop. What better reason for a road trip than fabric :-)

You may have noticed their 2nd location where they have their classes. It's stocked with fabric, supplies and notions too, so that when you are at the class, you can get the extras you need/want! It's just like walking into someone's home. It even has an "English Garden" in the front yard, so you'd feel very much at home! Oh how I'd love to take a class there too. I stumbled on it a few years ago and it's definitely on my radar when I am in the area. Although, from home it's only about a 2 hour drive for me and not quite the commute it'd be fore you, Little RoO ;). Sometimes I think it is good that it is that far ... or I'd be there a LOT more and my stash would be even bigger. |
Well... poop.
I'd say England to Canada would be a bit far. BUT, if you're "in the neighborhood".. :o |
LOL, I just may have to check this one out. It is about a 2 hour drive for me.
|
Oh, those nasty details!
|
But, on the upside, you're only a couple of hours away from Oakshott's warehouse sale tomorrow..........
http://www.oakshottfabrics.com/news/...housesale.aspx Most certainly worth the price of the petrol. eta: if your home location is further north, than the traveling time is even less. I'm so envious of your proximity. |
LOL...I drive to Exeter all the time! Quilts and Calicos is my fav LQS, they have all the fabrics I adore, lots of great kits, books...it's just perfect (for my taste)
I believe it is for sale as well, the sign was up at "the cottage" last time I was over that way....crossing my fingers someone takes it on. ...I live in Stratford ...and drive through Exeter in order to avoid going through London on my way to Morpeth (a few of the many British named towns and cities we have here in SW Ontario) I have the same problem when I do google searches - I often get British establishments! Joann |
I can tell you my Mom traveled over 500 miles with a broken pelvis .. to get to the "Fat Quarter Queen". That was a booth at International QUilt show when it was in Chicago... There was nothing short of a coma that was going to keep her from getting fabric... and if you ask her if it was worth it... without hesitation she says "YES".
|
No specifically to buy fabric, but I have bought fabric in Dunedin and Auckland NZ, Amsterdam and Paris while on holiday. I looked in London UK, but could not afford the prices.
My LQS options are about and hour north or south of where I live. |
I flew from AR to Boston then drove to NH to visit Keepsakes Quilting. That's the furthest I've traveled for fabric. LOL It was a visit with relatives in Boston but I never let on that a visit to Keepsakes was the motivator of my going. And to add icing...the Gee's Bend Quit exhibit was at the Boston museum during my visit and the release of one of the Harry Potter books at midnight, my granddaughter (she came with me) loved being in Boston's biggest bookstore at midnight for that.

Love living on this island -- and the fact we have three fabric stores is a wonder! If there were a way to "drive" the 90 miles to Oahu I could pack the car with quilters and we could all go crazy in "da big city"! What we all wait for here are the words "new arrivals!" When we get to the mainland, we all ship boxes home....it might be a blessing that it's so far away! Wouldn't move tho' for all the fabric shops in LA!

JMCDA ... this is not good news! ITA that hopefully someone else will take it over. Likewise Reichards in Elmira is for sale. Being at Stratford you have the luck of being not too far away from Country Patchworks ... another great store!
MTS ... *drool* ... love Oakshotts! Little RoO ... don't let us down. Please do go and check out the Oakshott sale! And you know the rest of the story ... be sure to let us know!:D) |

I have gone eight hours away for fabric, but it was on the way to see the grand kids. Does that count?
|
A few years ago me, and a friend, drove from where we live ( So. In.) to Keepsake Quilting in NH. We had a ball! stopped at Quilt Shops along the way, and every christmas Shop we could find. Our ultimate goal was KSQing and we had such a wonderful time. I have done a shop hop in Oregon when I was out there visiting my sister and went to the Stitching Post in Sisters Oregon. Isn't it wonderful that Quilt Shops are so different, yet their all Quilt Shops!!

Come on over to this side of the pond! :D |
For that distance, I'd have to be clicking the "submit order" on the computer screen! So sorry your bubble burst! Hope you can find just what you're looking for to achieve that special "pop".

I have traveled as far as Alaska. I wasn't looking for a particular fabric. Just wanted fabric from that location. Now when I travel and see a quilt shop, I like to buy a piece or two to help me remember places I have visited. Like a keepsake from that place. I love collecting fabric from different places.
|
Oh that is dissapointing!
|
Upstairs. That's about it. My stash is upstairs and my computer is upstairs.
Lord, please stop me from buying fabric!!! I'm out of control!!! |
I have not gone that far to actually buy only fabric, but I have fabric that I purchased in Japan, England, Germany, and several other places in Canada. I only started quilting recently, but have had a love of fabric for a loooong time.
When my son travels on tournaments, I look up the local quilt stores. There is a nice one in Cambridge Ontario too. Patti |
I always look before travelling for quilt shops on the way and surrounding where I go. I did travel from Alton Towers to Glasgow, it was for a wedding initially. I went to a caravan site in Birmingham and travelled from there to Southhampton for a twiddling class and fabric. How far do you travel for a class? All places in UK .

well if it were Exeter, MO (USA) I would say go for it, there is a great shop there! (Probably further then you want to go but great prices- lol)
|
I go to Buffao NY twice a year and load up while I am there....Amish country is a great place to buy quality at a cheeper price than most stores I have shopped.
|
Well I travel about 160 miles a several times a year to get fabric that is about $2 a yard cheaper then here!
|
Rebeljane and I have done it a couple of times (over 100klm) but we make a day of it.

When I lived in FL, I drove to MaryJos Fabric store in Gastonia NC at least twice to shop. I have also gone on day long shop hops where we drove to 5-6 stores across the state. Just depends. MaryJos...yes, it was worth the trip and the gas. I would love to go again sometime. Now its a bit further, since i live in Indiana :)
As far as classes go...the best and farthest I traveled for a class was to go from FL to California to attend Asilomar. I had 4 1/2 days in a class room with the teacher of my choice, Gai Perry..it was MARVELOUS and I do hope I am so lucky to get to go again! I did have free air fare though, as I had bumped myself off a business flight and so had free ticket. All I had to pay for was the seminar itself. It rather spoiled me for taking 1/2 day or day long classes! |
Oh, well, I'm only about 2 months late reading some of these posts, but what the hey!
The farthest I've traveled for fabric is Bozeman, MT, once a year, and last year I got to a couple of shops in Great Falls, MT, thanks to my cousin! Hope to do so again this coming summer! |
Quilts and calicoes is a nice shop, at one time there were two, one in Exeter and one in Windsor. I have been there before, too. The answer to your question I have gone on five hour bus rides to do quilt shopping and loved it. Oh yes I would go quite a ways away from here to quilt/fabric shop. Love it.
