How to fix skipped stitches??
 

I'm machine quilting (meandering) a quilt for my MIL on my Bernina 820. It is occasionally skipping three or four stitches. Need it finished by Friday, so I'm continuing on but how do y'all fix, go back and sew over, or what? [I know there is an issue with the BSR for this machine.]

I have had that happen using the BSR with my 630E! I will watch for answers to your question. I did go back and stitch over. . .

I don't know anything about the Berninas or the stitch regulator, but I do know that Universal tipped needles or worn/blunted needles can cause skipped stitches, especially in free-motion quilting. If you switch to a new sharp, it might eliminate the problem. Also make sure that your needle is seated correctly according to your manual.

I had the worst skipping possible when I spray basted - the needle kept gumming up and needing to be cleaned every few stitches and it was skipping more than it hit. The last time this happened, it was a vintage scrap quilt that I ended up throwing away. Nothing I tried could make the basting spray unsticky.

I don't know any way to fix the stitching that's already messed up other than getting out the seam-ripper and re-sewing those areas. Good luck!

I have a longarm and it will do that when it needs a new needle.

So sorry that you are having this problem adding to undue stress of the holidays. Hope a new needle will correct your problem and enable you to complete your quilt by Friday. Remember you can always gift it with the recipient's knowledge that you need it take it back to complete it, or wrap up a picture for them to open and give it to them after you have had the opportunity to complete in with more time without the stress and to your satisfaction. Good information, I sometimes have that problem. I will remember to put a new needle in when I start quilting a project.

I've been either going over the skipped stitches when I see them, or going over them with hand-stitching to shore them up afterward. No fun!

first i stop. i identify what is causing the problem---dull needle- or going too fast in some areas---and fix the cause----then i go back over & re-sew the areas that have skipped stitches- hopefully i noticed it right away and only have 1 or 2 places to fix---then when i am sewing correctly again i continue on and finish.

I found I got skipped stitches with my regular machine when I had a big ball of lint built up inside the machine.

You have to be careful what brand of spray you use. here int he UK we have 505 spray which is very good and doesn't gum up the needle. remember you spray lightly not hevily.

The 3m spray is awful and only suitable for paper. it gums up the needle and anything else it touches.

If the skip is bad, Icut the thread in the middle of the skip and pull out a few stitches enough to tie off the threads. If you are worried about the thread loopng you could try couching the thread down whilst quilting the layers a bit by hand.

Change the needle and make sure it is large enough for the thread. sometime using a larger needle can make things not skip.
