How to increase the size of an existing quilt

Years ago I made a quilt for our king size waterbed. Now we have a regular mattress and I found this old quilt and I'd like to use this quilt again. The problem is that the waterbed quilt is about 20 inches too short lengthwise and widthwise because it only had to be tucked in to fit. Can anyone give me sugestions on how to add additional borders to an existing quilt? Any help would really be appreciated. You are all so smart! Thanks.

You can add extra large borders by doing them kind of Quilt As You Go style. You cut the fabric pieces needed for the front and back of one side. You lay the front fabric strip right side down on the quilt and pin the edge to the quilt edge. You lay the back fabric strip on the back in the same manner with a strip of batting and pin the edge. You then sew the pinned edge by machine and smooth all the fabric outward over the newly attached batting to have the extended side (quilt now or later)You work your way around the quilt doing each side in the same manner. When all done you can quilt the edge extensions if you haven't already done them one at a time. Put on a new binding and you are done.

I had this same problem recently. I added a large (like 20 inches long) dust ruffle around the 2 sides and the bottom. I just sewed it to the underside of the binding.

Similar to alikigirl have an underquilt or underskirt for it if you don't want to add borders just to add borders.

Thanks, Tartan. I'm getting some ideas now. :-)

I added another row of blocks to my quilt when i bought a larger bed. I wasn't happy with the result. I had just sewn them onto the quilt and didn't sew the batting together. I think sewing the batting together would have made the quilt better, and I think I would have been happier with it (a la quilt as you go).
