Do you ever make up challenges for yourself? I wanted to figure out a way to use some interesting batik fabric I came across. Because it changes color frequently, it was a challenge. I found a pattern I thought might show it off and a solid from my stash. I'm familiar with PP but wanted to use templates or strip sewing, so set out to adapt the pattern. After a few goofs, I managed to get it down. Each 10 " block has 29 pieces. How long would you spend piecing a block?

I'd say it takes from the time you start to the time you're happy with it. What difference the time to piece it??Unless your challenge is to get the time done. Then, I'd assembly line the blocks and do all the same pieces at the same time.

Some blocks take longer than others but I would say the block you made was worth every minute it took to make. The colors are stunning.

ahem, til it's done. Sometimes that is just a few minutes, and sometimes I get hooked on the TV show and it takes an hour. I am not on a time crunch. So "whenever" is good for me.

i am working on a 6" block from the 'Nearly Insane" quilt book...it is a 6" block with 6 (rounds)...i think about 28 pieces, i spent an hour on it today and got the first 3 rounds done, it is cute and measures 1" now...center square is 1/2"; next pieces are 3/4" and the next 1"...i am hoping the next rounds go a little bit faster.
when i made the pineapple blocks those took an hour each...looking through the insane book some of those blocks are going to take ... a long time!...there is one block with over 200 pieces...that one is going to take some time-they are all 6" blocks, boy thinking about a 6" block with 229 pieces is a little overwhelming, i better stop thinking about it ;)

Those fabrics are stunning together. Very nice.

It takes as long as it takes. The more pieces, the more time. Love the block. the colors are great and you did a good job with it.

I know a lot of blocks in my sampler quilt took about an hour. Some took longer than that because they were more complex.

I had to cut out each block individually, since it was a sampler. If you can cut many blocks' worth all at once, it goes a lot faster. Then also once you get the hang of a block, it goes faster.

Thanks, but I'm so slow! I will really need improvement to get close to an hour!

Ummm. I'd never do a block with that many pieces! Good for you for being up to the challenge. It's a great looking block.

I just finished a top that's made of 7 blocks. Each is a hexagon, 6 1/4" across and has 121 pieces in each one. I could get one block made in two evenings work - so about 7 - 8 hours. Yes, the first 7 rounds are extremely small triangles!

I've also made pineapple blocks - 4 blocks to make a circle star. Those took about 20 min. each, so 1 hour 20 min. for 4. This was my first paper pieced quilt. Quite an adventure since there were 144 blocks to make.

This "takes the cake!" Is it a miniature?

Well, I did hardly any paper pieced blocks. Paper piecing is significantly slower for me, I think. Like I said MOST of the blocks took about an hour. Some more, some less. Some blocks I split up over two or three sessions, and I would guess they took closer to two hours. But nowhere near 7 or 8 hours. :-)

The whole pieced area is about 19" X 19", but will have a border so the finished size will be larger. I haven't figured out how I'll fmq it yet. It's on a pause for now, some other projects are in the works.
