How many colors?
 

I want to make a bow tie quilt using 30s repro fabric. I think it is called Aunt Grace. How many colors do you suggest? Should the background be white or could I use colors? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

I just bought some Aunt Grace fabric. I love it!! I think a white background would be appropriate for the fabric.

The ones I have seen use white for the background and all the repro's for the bows. That doesn't mean you can't change it up and make it your own. As long as your background color choice gives enough contrast to the bow color it will look great, you can even go with a dark background to show off your retro fabric. You can also change it up with each block.

I would suggest picking a few options, lay the colors out on top of each other, if one option doesn't go pick me! Then take a pic of your choices and look at them next to each other. This will help you make a good decision before cutting into your fabric.

This is one pattern I love in scrappy looks, so use as many fabrics as you want or as you have! :)

Here's a really great eBay seller who can help you with this - 40 six-inch wide strips of 30's repro's for $27. He's got other deals on various other types of fabrics - fat quarters, yard assortments, two-yard assortments, etc. Look and see if he has what you want. Occasionally, you will get a "stinker" fabric in the assortments, but the ones I've gotten are almost all good quality and have allowed me to handle a lot of fabric by different manufacturers. :) http://www.ebay.com/itm/400285467070

This pattern also looks good in just two colors plus the background - the "ties" forming rings around the background snowballs. :)

White or natural muslin or kona type cottons would be great, or you could use white on white prints - I love WOW with the 30's repro's. Have fun! Love those 30's!

and the number of fabrics is certainly your (personal) choice)
some of us will tell you the more the better :)
if you like scrappy's----a different fabric for each bowtie would be awesome.
if you are not so much....a scrappy lover---you may find only 4-6 would be better suited to your taste.
depends on the layout you are planning too-
that part you have to decide on- on your own- we can't decide for you what you like... :)
but white is a great choice for backgrounds
