Me too.

The quilting cruise I went on was organized poorly by a LQS. We were on a Carnival cruiseship & they had us doing hand work only & in the disco lounge so hard plastic chairs & poor lighting. I've heard great reviews about cruises with KayeWood etc. where the machines are all provided, etc. so IF you get a chance, I would say only go with a company who has done it successfully many times before. I love to cruise & I love to quilt.... but I have to say the times spent in the classroom were when we were actually cruising so I missed out on alot of deck time.
|
I've been on the inner passage cruise to Alaska, and believe me, there was NOT time for quilting!!! Would have missed a lot of sight-seeing, etc.
However, if money is no object, a quilting cruise with friends, or "new" friends would really be FUN!! |

Do hubbies go on the cruises as well? I would like him to be with me because I don't imagine you are quilting 100% of the time. |
I would LOVE to do this.... maybe someday! But I am fortunate that I take a quilting vacation every year with two quilting friends. We've been to Gatlinburg, TN, Hilton Head, NC, Wisconsin Dells, French Lick, IN, Boyne, MI, and Williamsburg, VA. This fall we're going to Cape Cod!
|
I want to go on one soon. From what I have read in quilting mags, the ones sponsored thru Stitchin Heaven, or advertised on the sites of the quilters like Kaye Wood, Carol DOak, etc. are the best. Cost a little more but they are organized so well. I wish they would do some that don't go to foreign or popular places. Just get on a ship and cruise while we quilt.
|
I think it sounds like so much fun!!!! Yes Spouses can go, a lot of times there will be something for the non-quilter to do too!
Someday....... |
I'd love to go to a seminar or class or something with Kay Wood. But not a cruise. I went on a cruise to the Western Carribbean and I can't for the life of me, figure out when you'd have time to sew!!!! Besides, they're a lot more expensive, it seems!

My daughter and I went on one 2 years ago. It was put together by 3 quilt shops. We didn't have any speakers. They had 2 classes, the elegant lonestar and the other class made smaller projects. It was a lot of fun and you have time to do other thing too. Of course some of the quilters stayed in the quilting room a lot more than Vicki and I did. We were making the elegant lonestar and needless to say we didn't finish the quilt on the ship.We got a lot of it done and finished up when we got home. Our cruise was on royal carribean( I'm not sure that is the way to spell that). It was a wonderful cruise.
|
I also went on an Alaska inner passage cruise. Most of the work was applique and I didn't realize this would be the case. I did, however, learn some techniques that I used later but I wish I'd known that before I signed up. Did have fun sightseeing and it was really fun to go to quilt shops in Juneau and Sitka. The entertainment was very good and the food was too fabulous (gained 5 lbs in 7 days). So, it can be really fun but check to see what kind of quilting will be taught.

I love cruises and go quite a bit. I have not tried a quilt cruise because I really like cruising and want to enjoy sight seeing, etc.
I would do it for the Mexican Riviera or to Hawaii, because you have so many days at sea and since all the problems in Mexico with the drug issues, I would probably not go into shore. I know there is one to Hawaii out of LA in September. |
Not yet, maybe some day.
|
I have not done one, but maybe someday. I have been on many cruises and think that if you had one that had a lot of sea days for the classes it would be better (like a 10 day Southern Caribbean or Hawaii from CA). Most of the 7 day Caribbean ones only have 2 sea days. For that much money, you'd probably want to spend some time doing cruise stuff.
|
A Quilting Cruise is one of those things on my "bucket list". I'd love it. I'm retiring at the end of May, so perhaps in the not-to-distant future?????

lol. yeah right..... maybe in my dreams.... but it does sound fun

There were several husbands with their wifes on the cruise I was on. There are so mary things to do no one would be bored.

I wish there was a american orient express one. I love trains and wouldn't that be fun to travel the country, stop, be driven to a quilt shop have a day class and off you go again. I would be in heaven.
I agree about the cruises being more fun to just sight see. I can't imagine fitting a class into all the fun of a trip like that. I am too exausted from all the fun! |
I want to go on one. Recently, I read about one in December. Thought I saved info. Not. So, if anyone knows of this one, please let me know. It said, Bernina machines furnished, quilting at sea, but, rooms always open. Help! Silvia

It sounds like fun but I have never been on one.
|
I agree with you! I love this idea!

I have been on a cruise but wasn't a quilting cruise.
It sure would be fun! Karen "Craftybear" |
It's a dream of mine also.

I have not been on any cruises, can't imagine I would ever have the money but the American Orient Express sounds fabulous so when I win Lotto..........

I decided quite a while ago to hang up my travelling boots. A quilt cruise though, might be able to get me interested, trouble is, I would find it incredibly difficult to justify the expense. I am frugal to the point of being labelled "mad" by my offspring.
|
The other day I googled "quilting cruises" and saw quite a few - one was to China but it was 3200 pp do - AND if hubby went, well ----------- no way could THAT fit into ANY budget. A cruise to Alaska sounds like a wonderful time! I alway wanted to see Alaska - This is justified by "killing 2 birds with one stone?"
|
I googled "quilting cruises" and did not find the one I was looking for, nor one this year. As I have been on a cruise in the western Gulf of Mexico, if the cruise went there, I'd just stay on board and SEW! Silvia

My quilting buddy and I went on a Kaye Wood quilting cruise. We never had so much fun on vacation before or since. The cruise was on Princess, western Carribean, with stops in Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Princess' own island, and Jamaica. We did the tourist things, seeing the sights, and shopping; we also learned Snippets. We all ate dinnner together each night, then played till we went to our cabins to sleep. What a great time we had; I would do it again if my buddy could get off work.

Also their is a cruise to the Mexican Riviera that is funishing Janome machines. Many do furnish your machines, it is a way for them to promote their product. Lots of sites out their on quilt cruises. |
Yes I do know about the tour trains. But, as of yet I don't think there is a quilting themed one. Please... Let me know if there is one! I am a great fan of the U.S. and how fun it would be to experiance two of my loves together.

If you've never been on a cruise before I wouldn't make my frist one a quilting cruise. There is so much to do and see on a ship that I think you miss out on quite a lot. And definitely go with an establised quilt-cruise teacher. And, if you're going to Alaska on the inner passage, I agree with the other person...you will miss all of the beautiful scenery!!!

I've never been on a cruise and I think it would be great fun. Heaven knows I love to quilt but I think I'd most enjoy doing them seperate. I'm afraid I'd be totally torn between the two. I wouldn't want to put the quilting down but couldn't stand the thought that I might be missing out on the cruise sights and activities either.
|
I would not like to go on a quilting cruise. I would miss all the sites and fun. I would rather go to a retreat to quilt and fun,fun on a cruise. lol Jolo
