I am making a tumbler quilt for my guestroom. I have been cutting out tumblers 6 1/2 inch. So far I have cut out 13 different fabrics I figure 12 across the 13th on the second row. Does that sound right?? has any one made a queen size? how many down??? 13? I will add borders also but trying to get the right amount of tumblers that I need.

It also depends on what size you want it, just hanging over the top, or like me, I want quilts that are total cover-ups, touching the floor all the way around.

I'm not even going to TRY to figure this out, math was never one of my better subjects. I majored in lunch and recess.

I have been struggling with how many and which fabrics to use...I have so many cut...just trying to get them all together...wondering if I have to many patterns...maybe I should repeat the blocks...

to figure the size of your quilt, i use the following

mattress size (actual measurements of top of mattress) + drop (depth of mattress & desired overhang) + pillow tuck (optional depending on if using with pillow shams)
+ 5 to8% for shrinkage from quilting & batting shrinkage (for more control preshrink cotton battings).

Hope this helps.

The tumbler pattern was orig. used as a scrap or charm quilt pattern. Most were ordinary utility type quilts. So scrappy comes to mind first. The more fabrics the merrier. If one fabric tends to jump out at you, give it company. This can be due to color, intensity or type/scale of the print of the fabric. Scatter the "company" around in the quilt. This allows your eye to be pulled around the quilt.

These tips are really from my Grandmother.
