How much fabric for backing? Lap and Queen size quilts
My local chain fabric shop has a huge sale on New Year's Day. I am planning two quilts between now and May. One will be lap sized, the other a queen.
Please give me an idea of how much backing fabric I may need for each size. Thank you. |
This greatly seems on the pattern used and the dimensions of the completed quilts.

This can vary a lot. Here's a calculator for backing and batting. Hope this helps.http://www.quiltersparadiseesc.com/C...Calculator.php

For a queen size I usually figure about 6 yards. Lap quilts can vary in size, but 4 yards should be enough for most lap quilts. If you don't have enough, you could piece what you have, and add a border of another fabric to make the quilt back larger.
|
It also depends on the width of the backing fabric, how much piecing you're willing to do, and whether you're using a longarmer who wants 4" all around vs. doing it yourself and being satisfied with only an inch or two. Sometimes you can drastically reduce the amount of fabric needed just by putting an attractive stripe across the backing using scraps or orphan blocks.

since I hand quilt all my quilts -- for a queen size which I make 90x108 I will get 7 yds. I wash my fabric before and that allows for shrinkage and enough for binding.
