Hi everyone,

I've been secretly working on a signature quilt for my husband's birthday.
I have it pieced and I hope it looks like a brick wall to everyone else.

I'm going to thread-baste this on a friend's hinterberg, then quilt it with my walking foot.

I think I should do horizontal passes on both sides of the long "mortar" pieces, but can't decide if I should do the same on the vertical mortar pieces (smaller ones between the bricks)

I'd appreciate any advice!

That's really cool! It does look like a brick wall to me. Depending on the batting you are using, you will want to do something vertically, or maybe just outline the "bricks". IMO just quilting horizontally will not keep the batting from shifting or bunching.

I would have to agree, that is an awfully long area without any quilting to help stabilize the batting.

What a neat idea! Love your brick wall!!! If I were quilting it, I'd outline each "brick" so it really stands out :D

you could do diagonal stitching across the siggy blocks themselves. just a thought. some one direction, then the rest the other direction.

That is gorgeous. I'd do both horizontal & vertical that way you're sure it stays put. I can see you've put a lot of time into it. DH will adore it.

I have to agree with others I think quilting around each brick in the ditch or just a hair away from the ditch would really make those bricks pop and add to the illusion of a brick wall look.

It is amazing. Great job. For quilting I would go:

Moving from left to right on each row, over the first brick, straight down, under the second, straight up, over the thrid, down, under the fourth, up, until you get to the end. This will minimize stopping and re-starting too many times, and going over areas alerady stitched. Most battings only need to be quilted at least every 10 inches, and that will cover it.

Whatever you decide to do, it will be wonderful.

You did a great job, it looks like a brick wall. Your husband will love it. I can't help you with your problem though, but I'm sure that whatever you do with the quilting, it will be great.
