I have been wanting to tie a quilt and one that I have ready for quilting is a log cabin pattern. I would like suggestions on where to place the ties; i.e., in the middle of the block or several places on each block? The blocks are 12" each. I hope I'm being clear in my questions. If not give me a nudge and I'll try to phrase it better.
Also, should I use a medium loft batting? I use Warm and Natural for all my other quilts. |
I like thick batting and would tie in center unless the design or size called for more.

Generally, when you tie a quilt, you place the ties where four blocks meet in the corners.
However, it is your quilt and you may place them wherever you wish. No hard or set rules. I try to use Warm & Natural for most things. Have fun and Merry Christmas. |
The tie placement is in accordance to the quilting requirements for you batting. If the batting says every 4" then ties should be placed every 4" or closer  :D:D:D

your fist is the 'usual' placement for your ties; each place you put your fist would touch a tie...about every 4" in a grid like pattern. some people use purl cotton, some embroidery floss, and some yarns. when you choose a batting, the ones good for 'tied' quilts say so on the packaging, if it says it needs to be quilted every 2-4" it is not good batting for tied quilts. choose a batt made for the project you are making for the best results.

When I tie, I use the quilt pattern to determine where to place the ties. How wide are your logs? If they are fairly narrow, I would place ties evenly spaced in perhaps every other log. I would also use embrodery floss, and match the floss color with the log color. I tie closer than need be I think, but like that look better. And maybe it holds up better. Not sure. Anyway, this is just MY way. Because of physical reasons, I am no longer able to hand quilt, so tie most of them. I have tied GFG, which are 1 inch hexagon's, and tied in each hex. I know you will get lots of other ideas........all good ones I'm sure.
