OK, now that I scored this auction quilt, what's the best and safest way to wash & dry it? It is musty smelling like it was stored awhile in a basement or attic. What soap to use? Gentle cycle? Dryer or hang dry? I really don't know where I would hang it.

probably a lot depends on the condition of the quilt and what it's made of
do you have pictures or more info about it? |
i would start by hanging it outside in direct sun for a few hours. this will kill any microorganisms (that mold smell). can you tie a lie to hang it outside?
then you can wash on gentle with woolite and hang to dry. |
You may want to contact your local or state historical museum. They can put you in contact with a local textile conservator who could advise you of the right way to clean your quilt. When in doubt, go to the experts.
If you want to do it yourself, I would fill up the bathtub with warm water, add some Orvus (not sure of the spelling) and gently handwash in the tub. Gently squeeze out the extra water (NEVER wring or twist). Roll the quilt up in towels and gently squeeze out the water. Continue changing the towels until the quilt is almost dry and then it should be ok to hang it to dry. |
Pics in picture forum titled Looky! Auction Score. It has a label on the quilt. It was made in 2002, so it isn't that old. Very good condition. It looks like it was never used.

I would just throw it in my washer on a gentle cycle with warm water and a mild soap or detergent. Then machine dry but don't overdry.
I use orvus to do all of my laundry. I buy it from our local farm store by the gallon jug. I have never had a quilt fall apart on me. I also washed my daughter's wedding gown the same way after she drug the bottom and train through the muddy grass at the outdoor reception. I didn't put in in the dryer because of the trim but it came out beautifully. I know that many quilters recommend the bathtub routine. I personally am not strong enough to wrestle with a soaking wet quilt. And forget kneeling on the floor in the process. Since it is physically impossible to wring as much water out of the quilt by hand as it is in the machine I am afraid hanging it up would be harder on the fabric than the dryer. Since it is not an antique do whatever works for you. |
