What tool can be used to do the marking for hand quilting. Something that marks clearly and will stay on for a while?

Thank you

I like to use Crayola washable markers. They wash out and come in lots of colors so they always show up on different color fabrics. I have even ironed them and they stiff washed out but your need to test them on your fabrics.

the best marker for handquilting for me is a mechanical pencil...marked just dark enough to see.....the thread will pretty much cover that pencil mark. I like the mechanical pencil better than a regular pencil because the point is always a point...does not get dull and thicker.....

I have used that too, or a white pencil for dark fabrics.

I found that it is best to only mark a small area that will fit in the hoop, otherwise they rub off and you have to mark over again. I used Fons and Porter chalk pencils and a stencil.

I use a mechanical pencil with #2 lead as well. I do have a white one also but rarely need to use that one. I don't think there's a marking tool on the market I haven't tried and the mechanical pencil wins hands down. And I've never had issues with it not washing out.

On light colored fabric cinnamon works and it smells nice.

I have found washable markers not to be so washable. Definitely test them first. I even tested mine first and they still didn't wash out when it came time.
