I have to make strips of 95 inched long and want to cut along the length of the grain. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to cut that? I don't know the best way to handle that much cloth on my cutting mat!

Well we don't have any quilt police here so here goes, if I have to have that long of a strip, I rip it!! and/or you could fold your length of fabric in half and cut it, just make sure it's straight so you don't get a "v" where it's folded! I assume you're using a piece of fabric not more than 3 yds. long, right? I have a large cutting table & am able to layout 1 1/2 yds. length so I only fold it once. I use 2 rulers butting them end to end to make the cut. I hope this helps, clear as mud, right?

Personally, I don't like ripping, you can end up with waves and still have to clean-up edges. If you happen to have access to a long t-square that's what I would use, I stole mine from my husband. When I have to do borders really long and don't want to fold my material numerous times I pull out my 48" t-square. Then I have maybe 1-2 folds to cut through. Works well.
Good Luck!! |
if you rip it,,start it wider than you need (by an inch or so) that way you have some to clean up your side, you still have to cut but it's easier to deal with than the whole yardage.

I rip, too, but still have to clean up that bruised edge from the tear.

I'm a ripper too. Depends what I'm using it for if I clean the edge.

I rip it too.
