Find that either of these colors accent a quilt, even in a baby quilt, the black is nice. What does everybody think?

amma 12-11-2010 06:10 AM

I like black and white together with an accent color, or alone with other colors to help make them pop :D:D:D

sueisallaboutquilts 12-11-2010 06:13 AM

So do I and I never thought about it until I joined the board and saw some beautiful things! :D

clem55 12-11-2010 06:21 AM

I would never have thought about black until I staerted seeing them here. Now they are beginning to be some of my favorites.

I like black and white. My first class was called 'On Point'. We had to select 28 different fabrics of 1/8 yd. each. I chose black and white. When I finished with the boby of the quilt, I added red for accent.
P.S. It's awkward to go to a fabric shop and carry 28 bolts to the cutting table and ask for 1/8 yards of each.

judylg 12-11-2010 06:40 AM

I have done two completely black and white quilts, queen and king size. I like them, they are striking, but I like the other quilts with just a little black in them, I find them as striking, never would have thought of doing that, but am going to. And another one I would like to do is a quilt with more plain white in it. On the top of my list for now.

I have noticed that too. I've even been using black items around the house. I recently redid some pictures I've had hung up forever and I just put them all in black frames and grouped them all together and it turned out great.

Once on a decorating show, I designer said each room should have at least one black item in it, whether it be a lamp, frames, etc. And she is right, it is good.

Oh, my do I love using black in my quilts. It just seems to anchor the design. I am using it extensively in a design I am working up using oriental fabrics. I made a grandmothers fan with black in it and it sold at the Women's Ministry Christmas Sale for $375.00. That was several years ago and I was a new quilter. It was only the third quilt I had made and everyone loved it saying the black really made the quilt.

The black and white quilt looks beautiful! I just finished the top of my first quilt ever and used black for the background. I like the way it came out, but one of the blues is a little too dark to really show up. I might try something similar with green and pink.

Maggiemay 12-11-2010 07:14 AM

I have never used white it a quilt but I am always drawn to those quilts with white sashings- might have to try it!

Really nice!

I love black and white quilts! That love started early! I had a black and white bedroom when I was 14.....striped walls, and checked bedspread.....and then my mom let me paint some furinture red. Pretty progressive for the 70's, at least for me. LOL

I am in the process of picking out fabrics for a new black and white quilt. Thinking of doing Eleanor Burns Day and night. The quilts you all have posted are beautiful!

I have a black red and white quilt planned for myself. It will be my "learning" quilt - It will be a sampler of sorts...I can't decide on a pattern for it, so I'm going to do EVERYTHING! lol There are so many neat blocks and tricks and patterns I've seen on here and I love them all...so this quilt will be a sampler of sorts, for all of the blocks I've wanted to try but haven't yet because I'm compulsive and MUST finish something before playing and I just haven't had the time. I'm also going to use it to learn FMQ. This one is all for me and I can't wait to see how it turns out. I have about 14 yards of fabric to play with, some yardage, a lot FQs...it will be fun!

Anyway...enough of my tangent. I love black and white with another colour. I'm not crazy about *just* black and white, though I have seen some striking ones.

GloBug 12-11-2010 07:41 PM

I'm currently doing a quilt in black & white with red accents,

The Amish type quilts have always been some of my favorites. They use LOTS of black with bright colors for their quilts.

Black & white are great together together! I love that stark contrast.
I have made a few that I think turned out really pretty!

Several years ago my sil was telling me on the phone about setting a Christmas sampler with black sashing and I thought this sounded so odd . . . . until I saw it! I loved how the black set it off. Now I use black in 99% of my projects.

Connie Merritt 12-12-2010 05:29 AM

I want to make a B,W w/ a touch of red for my son. BUT I just can't decide what pattern to use.

JUNEC 12-12-2010 05:45 AM

I love black and white quilts - I am collecting different sized patterns of black and white fabric for a quilt at the moment. Love the black & white quilts with a hint of a bold solid - yellow, red, purple, bright blue or green

WOW - awesome quilts

Black and white and red are great colors for baby quilts. These are the colors that babies see first...I think it's the great contrast. I made my DGD one and she looked at it all the time.

phatquilts 12-12-2010 05:53 AM

Thanks everybody for showing your black & white quilts. Those contrasts really rock.
I have different ones from past years. Some are very scrappy and some are the black & white tonals.

Black and white both lend themselves to more graphic quilts -- and those photograph well, so it's not surprising that you find you like them when you spot them here.

Some of the best design/quilting advice I ever heard, though I can't recall where I heard it: Make visual design decisions visually. In other words, go with what looks good, not with your sentimental favorite, or what you have most in your stash, or some kind of symbolism. I found that my quilts look much better when I sopped trying to make them be the recipient's presumed favorite colors, but rather went with what looked best, thinking of the quilt as a graphic design.

Could you adopt me - great looking quilt - love the color combo

desertrose 12-12-2010 06:51 PM

I like black & white with red for the accent color. The red is the pop color for me however, electric blue or green would also provide the same type of pop.
